endover
Sorry, I needed to re-title my post so maybe it would get a little more input. Looks like I'm either going with last years Pioneer Elite SC-65 for $1000 or this years SC-72 for $900. Both of those are amazon prices which is NOT an authorized Pioneer Elite dealer which means Pioneer won't warranty the item. Squaretrade is a third party warranty group that will warranty them for 2 years for an addition $90. I'd rather buy locally (Best Buy) but prices are way higher($1300) and they only sell the SC-72 but it would come with a factory warranty. That being said, Best Buy might come down close to Amazon's price. The SC-65 though seems like the nicer unit despite it being one model year old. It is THX 2 Select certified whereas the SC-72 is not (but do I really care). I'm running a 5.1 system with heritage speakers and have no real plans to go to 7.1 so there's plenty of extra juice and hookups in either unit and there's only 5 or 10 watts difference between the two units. derrickdj1
Square Trade has a good warranty service contract so Amazon would be OK to buy from. You can also purchase a ST warranty on thing you buy at stores. You can use Pioneer tech support because they don't ask for serial # or any other information other than the model number. The SC 72 is a 7.1 and has 4K. The SC 65 is 9.2 and has the same number of watts per channel. Are there any features that you must have or will need like the 4K? I think either would be a grreat avr to build the system around, The .2 is not really a plus and the DAC units are also very nice in the 2 Elite AVR's. I won't suggest you go listen to the avr's since they sound the same, he he.
endover
I don't have a dedicated home theater room. it's a family room/movie room so acoustics are "what they are". Having said that, do I really care if I don't get THX Select 2 (which is not offered in the SC-72)? I don't mind spending the extra $100 for the SC-65 to get the THX cert but if I'm not going to miss the extra features, I'll save the $100. I'm running 5.1 and my wife will make sure I don't spend any more money on a 7.2 system!
willland
Having said that, do I really care if I don't get THX Select 2 (which is not offered in the SC-72)? THX certification has some value but is more of a marketing ploy. IMO, not worth the extra $$$ for the logo to be silk screened on the front of the receiver.
