whell Posted July 18, 2002 Share Posted July 18, 2002 I recently found an old Sansui FR-D3 turntable at a garage sale. No cartridge or headshell. I paid only $5 for it. It has a universal headshell mount, and I have one on my other turntable, so I tried it out. When I attemtped to play a record, it was obvious that the turntable was not able to play the record at a constant speed. No amount of adjusting the pitch control rememdied the problem. This is a direct drive unit. The unit is in excellent cosmetic condition, with the exception of issue described above. The local electronics shop charges $75 minimum repair. Is this unit worth the repair? Mighty Favog Posted July 18, 2002 Share Posted July 18, 2002 This is something you may want to try yourself. After all, DIY is half the fun in this crazy hobby. Open the TT up and touch up every solder joint you can find. One of them may go to some sort of voltage regulator or quartz lock control. If the unit is a dual voltage unit (most are) make sure the voltage switch is set to 120/60. If the switch is in the 50Hz you will not be able to get it to stay stable. You may have to open up the unit to get at the switch or jumper but there should be a sticker on the outside stating that it is a dual voltage unit.
