This is interesting and reminds me of a TED talk that Tony Andrews did a while back. I heard one of the reasons behind the compression originally is that certain studios wanted their music to sound louder on the radio than others so they boosted the tracks and it compressed the signal. Bad music produces an adrenal response which makes us fatigued and is why its hard to listen to crappy mp3 music for very long while good music reproduction elicits a dopamine response which is why you can listen to vinyl for hours without getting tired.
