Max2
Just read about an older BK 70 watt 2 channel SS amp that had 3.2db of headroom. I have noticed most of the modern SS amps have some where between 1.25db and 1.75db. Why are we seeing much less with the newer stuff? russ69
It's up to the manufacturer to spec their equipment. Power measurements need frequency, distortion levels, and test methodology to be meaningful. I only use power measurements as a rough rule of thumb. Since the difference between 300 WPC and 600 WPC is only 3db, you really have to run the amp to see what's its got.
djk
"Why are we seeing much less with the newer stuff? " Because they are using better regulated, heavier supplies. 'High' headroom is code for: small, poorly regulated.
Max2
Thanks for the info guys. It seems like this amp got some very good reviews back in the late 80s and early 90's. Reviewers said it had detail with some of the best. For a $200-250 investment I figured it might be fun to give one a shot. I guess the big caps help with that crazy headroom. I kind of reminds me of the Class A kits out there. Edited February 18, 2015 by Max2
