Oppo BDP-103 USB & Streaming Questions

Have you used a USB hard drive with your 103?  Can it handshake with a large capacity hard drive, like 1TB?  Can't find much info about this online.  The manual says USB flash or thumb drives are a green light.  It gives USB power specs but I don't know if that's enough to spin a HDD.

I'm thinking of purchasing the 103.  Read about how stellar this and the 105 are....just curious about viewing video and listening to music via USB.

While I've got your attention :) how does the 103 work for streaming content from Windows Media Player via wireless router?  I haven't done any type of streaming so your responses might trigger more questions.  I'm open to other media players.  Read a lot of good things about JRiver.  Just using WMP 'cause that's what comes with Win7.

I have a BDP-105D that I use with a 1tb usb portable drive. Runs like a champ. I have all my CD's ripped to wav files.

I also have mkv files for movies and concerts. These are on an external hard drive with 4 bays. Seems to play everything that I've tried. I use the IOS app for access to the portable drive. Or the TV screen for movies.

With the 103 & 105, you can use drives larger than 2TB.

I have not tried streaming. With everything on the portable drive, I did not see a need to stream.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

I stream Netflix and youtube over my 103 wirelessly. I've not had a problem with streaming. The router is in the same room so I don't have a distance from router issue.

I also have a 1TB hard drive that I've hooked up via usb. Actually have only looked at the directory of shows on the drive so far but wouldn't expect a problem with watching.

Thanks Mr Froman

I should be able to figure out Netflix and Youtube without much problem.  Wireless streaming of desktop content to the 103 is where I'm ignorant.  Not sure how to use a media player and the 103 together to play music and videos.

Hoping the manual will be helpful when my 103 arrives this week!

If your not (or are) using a connected hard drive, you can access your computers stored music if it's on the same network. I'm using oShare and can get my music, video, pics, etc... when I go into the network icon in the Oppo's menu.

More here with the download link for oShare.

As far as it "powering" the hard drive, that won't be possible. The hard drive will have to be in an enclosure that powers it up. They are cheap. You can mount a bare 1gb drive into a powered enclosure for probably about $75. Of course simply hooking up the Oppo to a hard drive is not really ideal, as you would have to move it to a PC to put more music in.

Page 42 of the user manual goes into detail about accessing your media files on a server or computer.

Cool, I'll check that out online or the physical manual.  Thanks!

Thanks for the information and link, Tasdom!  A step by step like that is what I need to get started with streaming stuff off our desktop.  Good to know oShare allows MKV and Flac files.  Using Windows Media Player with MKVs would have been a bump in the road.  I assume way too much when it comes to compatibility among devices.
