Stump Posted May 4, 2015 Share Posted May 4, 2015 I was given this subwoofer and want to know if a car speaker can work well for Home Theater? It's a 12" Pyle Dual Voice Coil 1200 watt, used to replace the original speaker by the previous owner. The whole thing is some kind of custom job by Acoustic Electronic Company, model Bass Circuit RP-1, the only other info is a handwritten date of 1977 inside. I've never been a huge fan of the newer Pyle drivers but the specs will help determine what type performance to expect and what size box you'd need. If you have never heard it, and don't have an amp you can try, then most of us would tell you to pass on buying an amp. If you want a kick butt sub with no amp, they are all over the place. Look up Epik subs for instance. They had bad amp problems and went out of business. The subs are great. Just buy a dead one and add an amp. DaveWJr Posted May 13, 2015 Share Posted May 13, 2015 Skip that one, and move on! There is nothing inherently wrong with a "car audio" driver. They tend to have much stiffer suspensions than what you'd use in a home, primarily so they can be used in smaller boxes. More often than not, they're also designed for high mechanical and electrical (in that order) power handling more than high fidelity. This is, of course, a generalization. The driver you have there, however, is not really going to work well in any configuration aside from perhaps an IB setup...in which case I'd get a dedicated IB driver instead.
