slkdk
Hi, I am trying to build a budget home theater. I have a pair of RD-82 mk1 as main speakers. Trying to get a third one as a center. I want to build a 5.1.2 atmos home theater. The surround speakers will be small satellte speakers. Do you think a Onkyo SR444 could be effecient enough for a start? Best regards
Moderators Youthman Posted March 28, 2016 Moderators Share Posted March 28, 2016 Any receiver will do, some just much better than others. My concern with that receiver is the power. 115w (1kHz, 0.9%THD, 6 Ohms, 1ch driven, FTC)65w (20-20kHz, 0.7%, 8 Ohms, 2ch driven, FTC) As you can see, just by adding one speaker, it drops from 115watts to only 65. No telling how low it will get when you add 5 speakers to the load. There are plenty of budget receivers out there....check your local Craigslist if you are in the states.

Michael, Those specs are very flawed. Take a closer look at the two specs. 115w (1kHz, 0.9%THD, 6 Ohms, 1ch driven, FTC) 65w (20-20kHz, 0.7%, 8 Ohms, 2ch driven, FTC) Pretty messed up huh? With that noted, I do agree with Michael that the Onkyo mentioned will not properly power a 7 speaker setup unless your room is very tiny. Moderators Youthman Posted March 28, 2016 Moderators Share Posted March 28, 2016 Yeah, I saw the differences in the specs, just don't know which is supposed to be the correct measure.
willland
A "true" spec for multichannel amps/AVRs should be measured at 8ohms at full band(20Hz to 20kHz), all channels driven, and usually at .1%THD and 1%THD. Something like this Anthem. MRX 710 SpecificationsMaximum continuous output into 8 ohms, 20 Hz to 20 kHz, 0.1% THD: 120 W (2 channels driven), 90 W (5 channels driven) Bill
