What's the hierarchy?

What is the hierarchy of format choices relative to sound quality?

 

(I don't even profess to know enough of them to write it down)

 

I've seen DTS, Dolby, PCM...  it seems I can select something as a default choice?

If we are talking movie soundtracks here, then the top dogs are Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD-MA(Master Audio) and are both uncompressed lossless high resolution soundtracks the way the sound engineers intended.
