Soundthought
I just rediscovered my old Pioneer stereo that had been lurking in my basement for about 4 years. I bought it back in '88 at Sears. It is a solid-rack mounted component system. A reciever, equilizer, amp, and a tape deck all in one unit. Plus an external turntable. Anyone remember this system. It came with the Stereo (RX-521), a turntable, a stereo cabinet, and 2 Pioneer 12" floorstanders. I think they listed for around a grand for the complete system. I'm just searching for somebody elses' opinion of this set-up. Cuz, to me, it's sounding better than it used to. And it sounded great back then. Of course, i've got some Klipsch tall boys hooked to it right now. And, i'm using my Denon UD-M3 as the CD transport. So, i'm kinda cheating. But it rocks, and not only my Forte IIs, but My Quartets, RF7s, KG 3.5s, SB1s and KSB1.1s. What's up with that?
NOSValves
I have a 70's Pioneer SX780 and it sound pretty good also. I have alway's thought Pioneer made some pretty good gear. Not top of the line but still does a nice job. enjoy Craig
mobile homeless
I have to admit, that I did like my old Pioneer receiver from '73 hooked into my Advent speakers and listening to the UNC-Chapel Hill college radio station or WQDR FM from Raleigh, NC. There really was something great about that 35w amp listening to FM. Of course, I cant explain that rack system thing from Sears. What exactly have you been drinking this eve? heh.... ps- I just remembered! I think my Pioneer was literally the model back from your unit, Craig. I think it was the SX-737... or maybe the 727. One of those two I am pretty sure. But it REALLY a warm little amp for solid state.
Soundthought
I can't understand why this thing sounds the way it does. There's nothing terribly special about it. It's transformer looks to be fairly standard, and the caps aren't exceptionally large. But, it sure has a pleasant sound. Very warm and very involving. I'm just having a hard time believing that this unit can sound so good, especially after being in a damp basement for 4 years. Then again, maybe the 4 shots of Southern Comfort and 2 Rum-n-Cokes I put away, had something to do with that sweet sound. I will do another listening test this afternoon with a clear head. Who knows? It could sound like crap. Then again, it might sound just as good as it did yesterday. Viva la ancient Pioneer!
dougdrake
Craig - I've got the same Pioneer unit pulling everyday duty at my Dad's house - Pioneer SX-780. Bought it in college in the late 70's, and it has been in continuous use since then. (My Dad gets my hand-me-downs.) DD
