A regression correlation coefficient of 1 means that 100% of the data can be explained by a curve passing thru it. Depending on who you talk to a correlation of .95 and greater is considered direct. A correlation coefficient of .5 means that 50% can be explained and 50% cannot. Any value between .5 and .95 is an *indirect* correlation, it suggests a trend only in the data but also indicates either more data needs to be collected or a statistically significant parameter has not been captured in the model.
