Thinking about upgrading from ksf 8.5 to rp 280

Recommended Posts

Will this be a significant upgrade?

I like the sound of the ksf's but would like a fuller sound with more mids.

Use is;

80% tv

5% movies

15% music

The ksf are great for tv and movies but I would like more fullness (mids?)for music and music is my main priority.

I listen to classic rock and heavy metal.

I have a Denon x3300 and svs pb1000.

Other speakers are rp400 and r41.

I sometimes listen the the speakers on large with the crossover set at 40hz for the sub.

Mostly the speakers are set to small and crossed over at 80hz.

Depends on what sounds best with what I'm listening to.

I listen loud.

Thanks in advance.

Tom

Welcome to the forum!

Yes go with the Rp-280 unless another turns you on. Like RF-7 for larger and loud...

The 8.5's are about the same size but abit lower in quality.

What is it about the 8.5s  that you are becoming disenchanted with?

BTW, 8.5 are not a KLF model speaker...

Thanks!

I meant ksf. Sorry about that.

I am wanting more midrange, clarity and could even tolerate more treble.

I heard the newer speakers are more brighter sounding.

Phantom center while listening in stereo sounds great but sweet spot is very narrow. Sound stage is less than great.

The ksf I have also have a buzz/vibration in the 200hz range when turned up. I found this by playing frequncy sweeps through them..

I tightened the drivers and crossover but it only helped a little.

I got the ksf for free but see the rp 280 for sale for $400 each at Crutchfield.

They were out of stock for a while but they just got more.

I assume they are being replaced by the rp 8000?

Yes decent deals lately. Think so on the 8000, not necessarily replacing the 280s just a newer RP model with subtle differences, refinements. Has 8 inch drivers, which is same

thinking as the 8.5...

That's why mentioned the 7s with 10 inch.

While waiting on others to criticize my take on this, do a search if you want to of the forum.

There is quick information to be found on the 280. The 8000 also.

Search engine here is decent...

Edit: the 7s have 10 inch...

And see the 8.5s are 94 db versus 98 db efficient meaning you can go abit louder with the 280s with less effort. And they are crossed lower which with 2 drivers instead of 1, you should be better off in the midrange.

Or, you could recap your 8.5s and may have to replace the buzzing speaker if the problem. Tighten both 8 inch drivers a little more.

  • 2 months later...

Just a follow up.

After listening to the 8.5s for a couple months and buying a second pb1000 I realized it was the harshness that was bothering me. For a second I thought I wanted more treble and I probably did but without the harshness.

I bought a pair of polk s60 and they are much more laid back. Too much imo although I like the sound of the tweeter..

The 8.5 have more bass and mids but the s60 are clearer listening to Geddy and Geezers bass lines.

So basically I want more full and detailed sound than the 8.5 without the harsh.

Do you think the rp280 will have less harsh?

The polk are probably ok for easy listening, but they are not attention grabbing or impactfull.

Thanks in advance  for any opinions.

Thanks for letting know.

I say yes on the RP-280s as before however, would prefer others here to give an opinion.

Meanwhile, do a forum or Google search on the model where subject of tweeters are spoken.

Tone controls may help some.
