NOZ
All parts are ordered and paid for, not cheep. I majored in electronics for my schooling so I am going to assemble them myself. That was about 18 years ago, but I still know enough to get by. Any tips or hints would be appreciated. Thanks Sean
j-malotky
NOZ Good Call. I had Al build me 3 ALKs for the front of my HT. Having them match makes a very transparent / seamless sound between the Center and mains. Adds a lot to the overall HT experience. Sorry, but I can't add any network building tips. EJH
I can't see the through holes for mounting. It might be best to have those drilled before you place the parts! LOL. I'm starting to build some as well to replace my ALs. After measuring, I didn't see the need for the notch. Squawker bracket and Woofer t-block is clearly out of the way. How will you mount/secure the caps and inductors? Epoxy, glue, RTV, tie wrap mounts? So many options! I've assembled many PCB's with thru holes but never on top of wood. NOZ
Eric, I recieved the coils today from Solen, they only took three days to get them to me. I am going to hot glue them down. Well I am going to try that first. Sean
NOZ
Making progress... Inductors installed, bloody Litz coils, I had to scrape the insulation from every strand with an exacto knife, took four hours. Lucky I had the day off. NOZ
Yea m00n, they are ALK crossovers. There are tonnes of threads on them. They are for Heritage Klipsch, Belle, La Scala, KHorn.. Hope they are worth the $$$.... I'm sure they will be, or I'll make up an excuse to make them worth it..lol
NOZ
Sorry, ALK stands for AL Klappenburger, he designed them.
m00n
I understand the basics of what a x-over is, but what is the reasoning to these x-overs? Don't they already have some built in?
NOZ
The speakers come with x-overs and they are very complicated. These are an upgrade to them. They are supposed to be the best. The La Scalas are almost twice as sensitive as your RF-7's. Think about that. 100 watts in a La Scala is the same SPL as 200 watts in an RF-7 or close to it. This makes them ummmm...tempromental. Besides,I sold the x-overs that came with them for almost as much as it cost me to build the ALK's.
m00n
How much are these x-overs your building?
NOZ
$250 U.S. each. Mine are costing about $125 each DIY. Lots of teadious work though, I wouldn't recomend doing them yourself if you don't have electronics in your background.
m00n
just enough to cause some damage I am sure Anyway, doesn't sound like I need them anyway as I don't have any heritage. Now if there are some upgrades for the R7 line... Hmmmm.
NOZ
The only upgrade is Heritage.... You remember when I went through my delema of which to keep? The RF-7's are almighty, but the La Scala's........baby!!!
m00n
Right on! Well good luck man... I would hate to see you fry something. Be careful.
