keks8430
My Onkyo TX-NR7100 is an excellent receiver, unfortunately there is a bug in the current NR7100/RZ50 firmware. With a 5.0 or other layouts without subwoofer, the subwoofer signal is sent to the front speakers without Dirac Live correction. That means a boomy room is corrected only in Stereo listening mode. A provisional workaround is to turn the LFE signal off and set center and surround speakers to full range. Details can be found here: https://www.avsforum.com/threads/built-in-dirac-live-having-an-issue.3291069/ I hope Onkyo can address this issue in a firmware update. So far, attempts to contact Onkyo have been fruitless. I feel they are in the progress of rebooting, emails either cannot be delivered or you are fenced off. Especially no good experience with https://support.onkyousa.com/hc/en-us/requests There you talk to a chatbot, the ticket gets closed without resolving or escalating it. I hope "Zenbot-style" is not the future of customer service. wuzzzer
From what I understand, if you don’t have a subwoofer any speakers you have should be set to Large or Full Range.
keks8430
> From what I understand, if you don’t have a subwoofer any speakers you have should be set to Large or Full Range. Depends on your hardware. In this case, the nr7100 manual https://d2um2qdswy1tb0.cloudfront.net/product-manuals/SN29403981_TX-NR7100_En_20210421_web.pdf says: "If "Configuration" - "Subwoofer" is set to "No", "Front" is fixed to "Full Band", and the low pitched range of the other channels is output from the front speakers". If you have a stereo source, in principle, you are set. But Dolby Surround adds a very pleasant ambience. With such upmixing, or if you have an AC3 (Dolby 5.1) source or others with more channels, the problem shows up. As said, without a subwoofer, the subwoofer signal is played by the front speakers. And here it happens, the original subwoofer signal, thus the sum of LFE and the contributions of the center and surrounds below their crossover frequency is played over the fronts, but without Dirac Live correction. As the link to the forum postings shows https://www.avsforum.com/threads/built-in-dirac-live-having-an-issue.3291069/ in order to avoid the boomy bass, you have to take care of these low frequency contributions: LFE, turn it off using the web interface (ciuser/ciuser) Center+surround, declare them as full band. With the bug, you have to choose between - Stereo only, loosing other channels - no LFE and no full low frequency play of center and surrounds (Marvel..) or - being constantly reminded of your room modes (Jazz..). If possible, please help to pass the message to the Onkyo team. The obvious fix is to do the Dirac Live correction as the very last stage, after all signal summing and re-routing is done. The Klipsch Forum is just Klipsch, even though Onkyo is another subsidiary and f the same parent company. I will pass this along to the person at Klipsch (I’m a volunteer moderator not associated with the Company) who I think can pass it along to the right people. If I receive a response I will post it here and/or send you a PM. Thanks for your detailed explanation of the bug so that you if we can get this in the right hands they can do something constructive. How could I understand that? The bug is already solved? I can´t find any info about that in Onkyo FW changelog or Dirac changelog. Could You explain it to me please? Thank You! keks8430
Hi, sorry for the late reply. "Solved" above was the "automatic" reply closing the ticket. There is now a firmware update available via NET, but no information yet about what features or bugs are addressed. https://assets.onkyo-av.com/product-firmware/Firmware_Update_TX-NR7100_TX-RZ50_04_23-2024.pdf?v=1713922940 "Minor bug fixes and stability improvements." Not mentioning the bug in the bass management. From an older posting https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/built-in-dirac-live-not-working-with-upmixing-or-other-modes.49594/ In between, there are actual fixes: As confirmed by Onkyo, the actual firmware contains a bug in the bass management. If there is no subwoofer, the bass redirected to the fronts is not DL corrected. Since the fix so far has not made it into into an official update, I am sharing the link to the bass management fix Onkyo sent me. Use at your own risk. https://drive.google.com/file/d/18HbnGjpK1AS4oWlEeUzIvCDvrey-pmJ7/view?usp=drive_web Please follow the steps below: Preparation: Unzip the file and save all its contents to the root folder of a USB drive. Note: If there are other files on the USB drive, please delete them. Insert the USB drive into the USB port of the TX-NR7100. Procedure: 1. Press the ON/STANDBY button to power on the TX-NR7100. 2. Switch to the USB input and ensure the USB drive is recognized. 3. Press the ON/STANDBY button on the front panel while simultaneously pressing the NET button. 4. The display will show "Update via NET." 5. Use the TUNING UP/DOWN buttons on the front panel to switch to the "Update via USB" display. 6. Press the ENTER button on the front panel to start the update via USB. 7. Please wait without turning off the power until the "Complete" message is displayed. 8. Once "Complete" is shown, the update is finished. Edited April 26 by keks8430
