Hickok 600A, 550X, Sencore TC-142

Before I power these up, what precautions should I take (i.e. should I bring them up slowly on a variac, as I know nothing of their histories)? They came with an instruction manuals, which seem to clearly describe the test settings and procedure. Then, is there any way (for me) to test accuracy? Erring on the side of caution, I'll wait for an answer before proceeding. I'll check back after I vacuum and mop the floor...

Fini,

If you have a variac yes use it !! Start at about 40 VAC for a few hours then 60 and so on until up to full voltage. It sure isn't going to hurt anything ! I've never heard of a 550X is that a Hickok ?

As far as accuracy I had my Hickok calibrated by a Professional rebuilder. He goes through and rebuilt it top to bottom and then he calibrates it by the instructions and he also has about a dozen tubes that he uses to verify all his testers are testing properly with. I just had him recheck mine after a year about 2 weeks ago and all was well. But I'm lucky he only lives 5 miles from me. He is listed on AES sites as one of the preferred Test equipment rebuilders.

Craig,

The 550X is a Hickok. Actually, it's marked Model OZ-1 (Navy issue, made by Hickok), but documentation I have refers to model 550X, supposedly the same units. I can post a photo, if yer interested. I borrowed C&S's Variac today, and I'll bring 'er up tomorrow and try testing a few tubes!.

fini,

that 600A looks pretty nice to me. I'd hang on to that, there's a couple guys that can make it work like new.

here's something:

and :

I think this guy is the man on Hickok repair, restore, and calibrate, but I don't think he has a web site.
