Build kit tube amp or buy used Cary tube amp?

Recommended Posts

I was thinking of building a tube amp from a kit. Have been eyeing the products on bottlehead.com. I was browsing audiogon.com and found a Cary CAD-808 (Rocket 88) 20 Watts - Triode, 40 Watts - Ultra-Linear for $1450.00.

The kit that I want is right at $1500 for mono blocks but the used Cary has more power output and certainly looks nicer. Other than doing it yourself would it not be best to buy a used tube amp and get more value for the same money than to buy a kit?

I'm in the early stages of my tube education and any information would be gratefully appreciated,

Tony

Tell me about your preamp (Citation)? The Rocket needs considerable gain. Though undoubtably a great amp -- The Rockets often show up on Audiogon because people mate them with inappropriate preamps.

I love the Cary gear -- buy you might want to shy away from this particular amp.

If you are new to tubes and don't have developed soldering skills -- you might want to hold off on the kit idea for a while as well.

Would still like to know more about your preamp.

Will have to find the information on my Citation 25, not sure of its' location. I build high end workstations, servers and networks. Have done some soldering and think I could probably put an amp together.

Will do more research on tubes before I commit the money. Can't wait to hear tubes through my La Scalas.

Thanks,

Tony
