Tony Reed
Can anyone tell me what tweeter might fit these MTM boxes? The K-77M you see in one of the boxes apparently is not correct. Thanks, Tony
Klipsch Employees Trey Cannon Posted July 14, 2003 Klipsch Employees Share Posted July 14, 2003 It looks like a Piezo box. There were 5 Piezo tweeters used in some of those systems Labeled MTM. MMTM was 4 k-77 motors on 2 manifolds. Two totally different cabinets.
Tony Reed
Trey, I assume those Piezos are no longer available. Do you or Engineer Jim know of a suitable replacement? Thanks, Tony
ChrisCKidd
Hi, Tony Mine appear to be standard issue Motorola piezo tweeter horns available through MCM electronics and other similar suppliers. Does anyone have a closeup picture of the MMTM? I think I would much prefer these over the MTM's that I have, which currently need need replacement air choke coils for the crossovers and some of the piezos have reduced output so I'm thinking they should be replaced if I don't find a suitable alternative. Tony Reed
Chris, Do you have the model number of that tweeter, so I know what to order? Thanks, Tony
Tony Reed
Chris, Since you own one of these systems, please give me your opinion on the following 2 tweeters at Parts Express. http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=270-041 http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=270-040 I've also found a tweeter that is exactly the right physical size, the Pyramid TW12. Does anyone have any opinions on this unit? Thanks, Tony
khorn58
we usefd 5 ev t35 for high end(same as klipsch stock twetter k77). They should work fine as replacements for a higher quilty high end.
Tony Reed
My problem with the K77/T35, is that they won't fit in the piezo boxes. I've ordered the piezo tweeters and I've started "restoring" the boxes. We'll see how it turns out. Thanks, Tony
ChrisCKidd
Tony, Sorry I didn't get back to you. My tweeters look like the ones at parts express more like the 270-041 I believe. The problem with substituting compression type drivers like k77 or t35a with that network is that I believe it will affect the system impedance if conventional 8 ohm drivers are wired in parallel as the piezos are wired in the original setup. Let me know how it works out if you can.
Tony Reed
Chris, I've received the Piezo tweeters, but I need to do some "restoration" work on the boxes. I'll post pics when finished. Tony
colterphoto1
digging through some old posts- Tony how did your MTM turn out? I've refurbished two pairs of them with PE piezos and they're fantastic, just not long throw M

colterphoto1
Tony, we're going to need an updated photo for our files []
colterphoto1
not knowing the impedance of a piezo, I wonder what would happen to output if we bypassed the resistors in the network? I can't do the math with 'infinite' resistance of piezo. hmmm.
djk
Could you get me a schematic of the Klipsch network for the piezo version? The Motorola KSN1016A is 0.13µF, or about 76.5 ohms at 16Khz. In my clones I use anywhere from 62 ohms to 100 ohms in series with each tweeter. Additional components make the composite look like a resistive load to the network. An autofomer was used as well. djk
Thanks Michael. It has a low parts count (compared to mine). About 9dB of voltage boost with the autoformer. I used several different versions of my designs for PA from the late 70s up until about 10 years ago. I have a pair sitting beside me as I write this. I may play around with these some more. Here is the Altec network for driving the KSN1025 type piezo (the 1.8Khz models): http://www.google.com/patents?id=mns-AAAAEBAJ&printsec=abstract&zoom=4&dq=4,481,663,&source=gbs_summary_r&cad=0_0#PPA1,M1
