JamesDL Posted August 1, 2003 Share Posted August 1, 2003 So tonight my dad gave me his old turntable that he has been telling me about since I've started getting into hi-fi. He used to be into it himself - he had huge warfdale speakers way back in the day. The turntable is a Gerrard Lab-80. It looks well takes care of, except that it's been sitting in the attic for 25 years or so. I need to get it refurbished, the motor works but makes a clicking noise when it runs, and the wires could be replaced, and I don't even know if it will play a record, I don't have either a record or anything to plug it into. My dad tells me it was top of the line when he bought for $100 in the 70's. Does anyone know about this turntable? How much money is it worth to refurbish it over getting a new one? Will the performance of this turntable be comparable to new turntables? If you guys want pics I have a digital camera and I can post them this weekend. I can't wait to start collecting some vinyl... OTOH, if it is in good mechanical shape with a decent cartridge, it will beat the pants off any CD player at any price. Experiment, enjoy. Life is good!
