Juba310 Posted August 27, 2005 Share Posted August 27, 2005 I plan on buying the Rf-35's soon along with a HK avr-125 reciever. I was wondering what type of speaker wire/ connections i should get. What gauge/ maker / where should I get it from? Also, should I get some type of connectors such as bannana plugs or anything like that? Help is appreciated. I have bought other speaker cables just because they look good but speaker cable does not matter that much. intotubes Posted August 28, 2005 Share Posted August 28, 2005 Zipcord is a common term used to describe 2-wire "lamp cord". One wire is smooth and the other is textured so you can match polarity. Steve_L Posted August 28, 2005 Share Posted August 28, 2005 You absolutely MUST use expensive, highly bubble wrapped, Monster Cable (or equivalent) cable and banana plug connectors at both ends. IF you don't, your HT store will suffer serious profit degradation. []On the other hand, you will do just fine if you go to Radio Shack or Home Depot and buy standard "zip" cord. It'll sound fine and you won't notice any audio difference no matter how much money you throw at this non-problem. On the other hand, it is really nice to have a nice clean mechanical/electrical connection that is well marked at both ends, so the banana plugs are a nice addition. I got mine a http://www.bluejeanscable.com/store/speaker/index.htm for a song and they work great and even sent along added heat shrink (color coded red and black) to finish off the job. Makes the installation behind my receiver much more manageable, neat and clean. Seriously, neatness and convenience is great, but don't feel like you got to spend a lot of money in this area. DO make sure you have the polarity correct, (plus to plus, minus to minus) at both ends. However a good set of interconects will greatly imporve a system IMO zip cord is sometimes also called lamp cord.... two wires molded together in a parallel fashion.... speaker wire by definition CANNOT be "balanced".... balanced cable is what pro audio systems use for interconnects - it uses two separate signal lines with a third ground line.... all speaker lines would be considered "unbalanced"..... if your speaker wire came with the term "balanced" on the package - it is simply a marketing term and has no meaning in reality.... 14 gauge or 16 gauge will usually be fine unless you have real long runs (over several hundred feet)... the attached pdf is from the belden website and lists the lengths of different gauges of wire and the percent of signal loss over those distances cheers! 12.32.pdf Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
