big c
I have the DENON 3802 110 watts per channel, if i was to run my fronts with the same 110w or even 100w per channel from a 2 channel amp. How much of a improvement would i get assuming i get a good amp (rotel,b&k,parasound) just to name a few.
Vavoline
Considerable improvement, and no, all watts are not the same. Ask the tubies over in 2 ch. I am powering my mains with an early 80s ss 150X2 Denon amp, and it has made a nice improvement. Now this amp is by no means in the league with the ones you mention, but it was ~$750 in 1982, so it ain't exactly crap either.

Piranha
Try finding a B&K AVR 307 floor/display model with full warranty at 50-60% off list. You won't be disappointed.
