richr8
Does anyone know if it is possible to overlay the OSD on top of a movie that is being viewed. This was possible with my RV-1105 but does not seem to be an option on the 2400. Whenever the OSD is selected the audio remains, but the picture is replaced with the OSD and a black background. I have it hooked up through the component feed. My interpretation of the manual indicates that this is the way it is designed to operate, I just want to make sure I am not overlooking anything. I don't know why they would change this.
gcoker
No, I don't think so... You can overlay it on the sound from the movie if you do not run your video signal through your reciever. I have my video connection straight to the TV and audio through my receiver.
yamaklipsch
I have the Yammie 1400 which works the same way as your 2400. The menu will not overlay on DVD connected with component cables even when the GRAY BACK option in DISPLAY SET menu is set to AUTO. It will, however be superimposed on sources connected with S-video.. see attached file..
richr8
Thank you both. So how significant is the trade off stepping down to S-video from component? I do not have HDTV yet. I do like having the overlay.
yamaklipsch
I like the superimposed menu as well, however I didn't think it was a fair tradeoff for DVD picture quality. I don't have an HD set either so I would like to take advantage of the best quality I can get at this time. When I swapped out my s-video for component, I did notice a difference in picture quality. Rizcrime
I was looking into the RXV 1400 receiver and I ran across your post. The salesman at a store really likes the Yamaha RXV 1400 and one of his selling points was the easy on screen menu to set up the best surround sound. If you use component hookup from the DVD to the receiver you will not be able to use the menu?? Please elaborate if you could. Thanks, Dave
yamaklipsch
You will be able to use the OSD, however when watching any source connected with component, the receiver will not superimpose the menu over the picture as shown in my screenshot in my previous post. That pic was taken with the menu overlayed on my digital cable box connected with S-video. The menu will instead appear on a gray background. See my screenshot in this post. Don't know why Yamaha chose to do this. It doesn't bother me too much, but there is a lot of talk over at the AVS Forums about how this is an inconvenience. gcoker
On mine the OSD (on screen display) is output through the monitor out on the reciever and not through the component output.
richr8
Also true on the R-V1105, my last receiver that did not have component outputs. Seems to only be an issue with the component out since OSD overlay is still available on the 2400 through the S-video out. A minor annoyance IMO.
