Allan Songer
Harace Parlan is one of my favorites. He came out of Pittsburgh with the Turrentine Bros. in the late 1950's and the first important gig he landed was with Mingus who loved the funk, blues and soul that just oozes from his playing--I'm sure a lot of you here have "Mingus Ah Um" on Columbia, a disc that Parlan shines on. After leaving Mingus Parlan went with Lou Donaldson who brought him to the attention of Alfred Lion who signed him to Blue Note where he cut seven EXCELLENT LPs between 1960 and 1963- trio dates, and horn sessions as well. I know some of you here have recently gotten into Sonny Clark, Bud Powell and Duke Pearson, so here is ANOTHER Blue Note piano giant for you to discover! MarkBK
Allan, It's been a long time since I heard Horace Parlan - I'll have to dig deepr into my vinyl vaults. Currently on a Horace Silver kick - another great one! MarkBK
