Wester97
I thought that too - but I am hooked up to a DVD player w/ digital coax and tried watching a movie in dolby 5.1 - still didnt work.
kegman
Well that is something completly different! If your watching a movie and you selected 5.1 from the audio menu on the dvd and your plugged into the reciever through the digital cable, .1 sub light should come on. But if your putting in a 2 channel source the sub light should not come on. because your not supplying the recievewr a sub channel, the sub channel is being made by extracting low bass freq from your front channels. Why it will not come on with a movie that has a .1 track and you've selected it I have no idea but it should'nt come on from a 2 channel source! Wester97
I got excited when I went into my dvd player menu and changed it to 5.1 dolby ... but it still didnt change the speaker schematic on the diagram. The sub is hitting - I just want it to be setup right and tuned correctly to optimize the sound.
Wester97
Anyone have any more suggestions?
colterphoto1
the Yamaha is 'outthinking' you. READ THE MANUAL READ THE MANUAL READ THE MANUAL READ THE MANUAL READ THE MANUAL When you change inputs say from CD, which it thinks the NORMAL mode will be stereo (unless you tell it differently) to say DVD, the YAMAHA WILL TRY TO PUT THE SYSTEM IN THE "BEST" DSP MODE FOR THE INPUT. It's in the book. WHen in DVD, it will search for 'flags' on the DVD that will tell it 7.1, 6.1 hell 8.3 i dunno, but it makes an attempt to give you the 'best' DSP/HT mode. THAT IS WHY (YES I'VE RAISED MY VOICE) WHEN YOU GO BACK TO CD, IT THINKS STEREO, THE DURN PRL GOES OFF AND YOU GET NO SUB. Youve got to tell it each time SUB or you'll get none. It's trying to give you normal stereo with NO SUB when you play a CD because when most people want NORMAL STEREO it contains just L + R and NO SUB. turn the power off and read the manual. It's all there. Michael
colterphoto1
or just take it back and get a Denon.
Wester97
Yeah, I read about the flags. I'm watching a DVD and supposedly the dvd player is sending 5.1 dolby. So I switched to my 5.1 dolby mode, still only shows the 2 front speakers. I'm still confused, although it sounds decent.
Wester97
Here is what Yamaha had to say: ------------------------------- During normal operation, the LFE/Bass out should be set to Both. When you look on the bottom right-hand corner of the display you will see certain speaker lights lit up, this indicates the signals that the source is sending into the AV receiver. These icons do not indicate what speakers should be getting sound. Please refer to the following examples. Examples: L & R: are lit-up, this means that the source is sending a 2-channel signal only into the AV receiver. L, C, R, RL, RR and LFE: are lit-up, this indicates that the source is sending a 5.1 Dolby Digital or 5.1 DTS signal. If you are watching DVD movie and are only seeing L & R lit, verify the following items: 1) Make sure that you are using a digital audio cable (either optical or digital coaxial) from the DVD player to the Yamaha. 2) Check the digital audio out settings on the DVD player menu to make sure that both Dolby Digital and DTS are turned on. Wester97
I got it working! I changed the digital output on my DVD player from PCM to bitstream! Thanks for your help everyone! I actually learned a lot from you guys, I'll be back if I have any more questions. Thanks again! -Wes
Wester97
It shows all 5.1 speakers on the display, although the 2 front speakers are lit up brighter than the others - what do you think that means??
