hyres-com
I would really appreciate any help on how I could make my new hobby a career. I love the whole Home Theater and everything that goes with it. Ex. Design, Installation, etc.

hyres-com
When you say go to school and get a degree. What type of degree would you suggest? I do not believe that I had ever seen any classes being offered about Home Audio.
boom3
An Associates degree in Electronics Technology is a good starting place. If you have any prior social science electives you can get in as little as 18 mo. That education will also help you filter out a lot of the BS that circulates in the audiophile world. tpg
For a higher-end degree than Associates, look into at least BS in Electrical Engineering or Acoustic Engineering. Perhaps a little of both... I'd like to make this hobby a job, but, sadly, I am schooling for a degree in computer engineering. Why? I don't know. I just build amps/speakers on the side for fun and sometimes for money. Hang out at the DIYAudio forums and other places like that for a while. You'll pick up tons of info about amp and speaker design.
st. patrick
....the term "hobby" is merely the euphemism we use for what our spouses consider our obsession/compulsion/addiction/mistress.............so, in reality, it already is so much more than a mere hobby.......gotta get back to it. DrWho
I would highly recommend NOT going into the Audio Industry. There are very few good jobs unless you already know established people and even then, it's a hard life. As far as degrees go, there are none specifically for audio. The clostest you will get is an Electrical Engineering degree. A lot of jobs even look for Business degrees. Keep in mind that the music industry is very small (despite the fact that you find it everywhere). Ford Audio which is one of the largest sound system designers and installers has about 30 people in the entire company. Audio Designs, a much smaller company in Michigan has under 20 people. I think Shure near Chicago has maybe 60 employees. I think it'd be safe to claim that just about every audio company has under 100 employees. If you're good at sales then I would try getting a job at a local Home Audio Retailer and work your way up there. Sam Ash and Guitar Center would be other great places to check out. I've always dreamed of mixing for a living and I even have quite a few contacts in some of the bigger places, but it's not worth the risk for me to go all out and try to make a living that way, because if I don't make it to the top, then I'll be stuck with a crappy living. kenratboy
Maybe Trey could give some insight. He is a lab tech, right?
