theryugobuddy
50 years before Muhammad Ali, there was Jack Johnson. If you liked Ali the man, this Ken Burns documentary is very interesting/entertaining. Jack Johnson was just as bigger-than-life and defiant as Ali, even though he lived in a much more intolerant/racist society(I'm white-I loved it). I just saw it on PBS the last couple of nights -- "The Rise" for one night and "The Fall" on the second night. I don't know when it comes out on DVD, but it will be a great purchase. Great jazzy, bluesy soundtrack.
ARPRINCE
Yup I did watch it too. Nice documentary and I enjoyed it a lot. There was another special I watched (I think it's on the same channel) and it was about Ali. He watch the broadway show "The Greate White Hope", the story about JJ. He came to see himself in JJ so when he was stepping into the ring for a fight, he sometimes shouts "GHOST IN THE HOUSE" referring to him as an incarnation of JJ. synthfreek
For all you "rockers" who would like to venture into jazz but don't know where to start I'd suggest the awesome Miles Davis album Tribute To Jack Johnson. Miles was a boxing enthusiast and scored a movie about Jack Johnson. Ron Carter, Billy Cobham, Chick Corea, Jack DeJohnette, Steve Grossman, Herbie Hancock, Sonny Sharrock & Wayne Shorter all make contributions to one of Miles' most rocking albums. I've heard that this was actually Miles' very favorite album. Just thought I'd share.
