RF-7 dual tweeter and mid horn?

Hi, I've been thinking about getting the Klipsch RF-7 for some time now

but the Premiere line seems to be taking a long time coming out so I'm

thinking about going ahead and getting the RF-7's after I heard them at

my friends house, her husband has had his for about a year now and loves

them. I've been floored by the sound, so live and real sounding than

any thing I ever heard. I can't imagine the new line could surpass it

because it just doesn't seem like you could get any better than that

RF-7 already is.

My question is this, it's a 2-way system and the new line will be a

3-way system. If the RF-7 is only 2-way, does this mean that the horn

on it does both the tweeter and mid-range horn work all on one horn?

Should I wait for the 3-way if the performance will be better on the

separate horns for the tweeter and mid? I just don't understand the

2-way vs. 3-way thing means? Thanks for any help. Kathy

I'm not sure about the new Premier Line. But the difference between a 2-way and 3-way speaker is purely up to the listener. Yes the Midrange on a 2-way speaker acts as a mid and a tweeter. 3-way seperates the two signals, 2-way combines them, now you decide which sounds better.

Um, yes and no. Think of it in terms of the frequency ranges handled, simply defined in terms of crossover points. The RF-7's cone speakers handle frequencies up to 2200 Hz, the "crossover" point, and the HF horn above that. (Actually, the crossover is really a phaseover, as the upper driver/horn tapers off below that frequency and the LF driver tapers off above it.) That's pretty low for a tweeter, but quite high for a midrange lower cutoff; traditional Heritage 3-ways have had 600 or 700 Hz crossover points between the cone woofer and the midrange horn, and the tweeter started around 5K plus or minus. (For reference, 440 Hz is the orchestra's tuning "A", 700 Hz is about the violin's highest, or "E" string, 1000 Hz is close to the soprano's "high C" and 2200 is over an octave above that. 4000 Hz is around the highest note on the piano.)

There was a very recent thread, which I can't remember or find, that discusses opinions that the lower the treble (midrange) horns go, the cleaner and better the sound and quite possibly many forum members like Heritage. Perhaps someone can come up with it. But, the answer to your original question is, the 2200-Hz horn is in between. The new speaks should be very interesting.
