IB Slammin
Could someone explain the order of crossovers (1st, 2nd,3rd) and the resulting effects of each? Thanks in advance, Terry
Al Klappenberger
"order" is simply how may parts (or elements) are in the filter. Most networks use "Butterworth" response which yields 6 db per octave per element. "first order" is N=1 and has 6 dB / octave "second order" is N=2 and has 12 dB / octave "third order" is N=3 and has 18 dB / octave so on ...... and "octave" means double the frequency. Al K. MrMcGoo
An order is 6 db per octave, so fourth order is 6x4=24 db per octave. If a crossover is set on a processor at 80 Hz, the bass going to the speakers filtered by the crossover will be down 24 decibels by 40 Hz, one octave lower. This assumes that you have bypassed any crossover on the subwoofer. Bill
