OT: Routers - fixed and plunge

Since I'm outa here for the rest of the summer 2.gif I do some thinking on this.

The PC looks very good. The Bosch looks very good (has soft start too, which was mentioned. Plus the 1/4 and 1/2 inch collets.

Most stuff would, as has been pointed out, use the fixed base. I'v ebeen talking with the two carpenters/cabinet makers at the college where I work too, getting their input. I can drop by and see them work (bug 'em all the time actually).

Good advice so far.

I also have the Porter combo unit.

It will use both 1/4" and 1/2" shank bits. I always use 1/2".

You should look at what job you are going to be using the router the most.

If you are making dados for book shelfs, rounding over pieces of boards and such than a 1.5 horse is fine IMHO.

When you say you want big bits like to make raise panels for doors then you need a 3 horse and a router table, again IMHO.
