Dylanl
I have the chance to pick one up for 300. Is this worth it. I am currently running a Yamaha HTR 5600 receiver. Would the soound be much better seeing that I will be using it as a pre amp? Thanks
jbsl
I have had mine since 2001 and paid $1800 for it. It worked very well with my KLF 20s, C7, and SB3 for rears. It does music very good and home theater great!! If you want to do 7.1 then you need to get a amp for those speakers but the receiver has 7.1 on it. I have not heard the Yamaha so can not compare the 2. For $300 make sure there are no issues with it. Xman
Dylanl
The Yamaha I am using as a pre was 325.00 New. I have another amp that I could use to power the 7.1.
Frzninvt
I used a Denon 4800 for about two years I thought it was a great unit! Sounded good. I sold it to my brother in law who is still using it. I think it will certainly sound better than that Yamaha, IMO of course.
colterphoto1
It should be better than the Yamaha HTR series. Michael
Flason
For $300 it is a good deal. They are still selling for $500-600 on e-bay. Go for it.
Dylanl
He said he would throw in a HK PA 2000 2 channel amp with the deal. So you all think I should pull the trigger? It seems to me that Pre amps and receivers are a loosing proposition over the long haul. All that they do is start loosing value from the day you buy them. Amps and other peices seem to hold there value much better. I guess you have to look at them from that standpoint. Brett
Frzninvt
For 3 bills - absolutely! If you don't like the Denon AVR-4800 let me know I might take it off your hands to replace the Denon AVR-3300 in my bedroom.
billyjoe72
Heck yea go for it. Wish I could come across a nice powerful amp like that for $300. Anyone have another 4800
kenratboy
I cut my finger on a 4806, does that count?
Dylanl
OK I am going to do it. I will let you all know when I pick it up. I will post pictures.
MrMcGoo
Make sure the remote is included and it all works. If it all works (5.1, remote etc.), it will be a very good buy with the added amp. The 4800 made rated power with all 5 channels driven and was THX Ultra2 certified. Bill

If it was my deal, I'd sell the HK amp to get most of my $300 back and enjoy a nearly free receiver! Then again, you might want to use the amp to run additional speakers.....ya' done good either way!! By the way.....The page that compares a receiver's true performance to its advertised specs says the Denon AVR4800 actually provides up to 148w x 5!! Congratulations, Rick. It came out way before there was such thing as Ultra2.
MrMcGoo
The AVR was only THX Ultra certified, not Ultra2. Bill
Dylanl
So, I was reading the manual and you can run DTS ES if you have a 2 channel amp to support the receiver. Do I have it right? Anyone want to buy the HK I do not need another amp it just came with the deal?
jbsl
I have not tried it on mine but yes I think that is right. The way I understand it is if the DVD is not encoded in DTS ES then it will only do 5.1 but I might be wrong. Does anyone know if DTS ES takes 5.1 and turns it into 7.1? If I had a larger living room I would set it up. Xman
