What is that plastic crosshair thing shoved back in the horns tweeter used for?

I noticed that most klipsch speakers have always had a black plastic crosshair thing stuck in the horn. My RS7's have it as do my older klf-20's. Does it have a purpose? Is it just for looks? I am concered because my Rc7 and my RF7's do not have one. But yet on the box it is pictured in them.

It's a phase plug. I believe its ultimate effect is to smooth the response of the tweeter. I don't know whether the RF-7 should have a visible one of not. I'm sure it has one, but it may be deep in the driver behind the "bug screen".
