OT Car audio subwoofers about the Size

Just thought I would chime in on this. Sounds like many people on this forum oppose strong car audio. I must also oppose the inconsiderate that like to show me how loud and inaccurate there stereo is while at the car wash and such. Now these types are up in the dumba** class in my book. However, there are those of us that enjoy a loud quality system in the car. After all, any of you spend much time in a car every week? How about that $50K sound system in the house? I play loud but respectfully turn down at stoplights and sensable places. Come on, many here run several 18" subs in the HT and most people wonder, WHY? Well as per me experience, some people like to hear their music and some like to feel it.

On the larger car subs, I have heard many as car audio is more my forte. They are very inaccurate and slow. 12-15" is best for quality sound, but too many think, add a sub (or 3-4) and you now have a cool sound system. NOPE, you just have bass. You need mid bass and treble and make it all match. I really enjoy the mid range performance of 8" drivers my self on a 4 way system. The mobile concert appeals to me.

Just my thoughts.

I am firmly against loud car audio. I live in a very upscale neighborhood in

the suburbs and we have a few young kids around here who "bump" every

day, speed and scretch their tires, One of them in fact assaulted me

with two of his friends after I confronted him about his driving

habits. There is only one reason they do it and that is attention. The

list of reasons for not doing is so long that Im not going to even

start. Here is a very accurate and appropriate article you should all

read. Most of it is stuff you already know, but it really brings some

serious statistics to light.

http://www.lowertheboom.org/trice/BoomCarNoise.pdf

Competition

or not, MTX has lowed my standards of living because of all the noise

they have made around my house. I think the government should be more

effortful about boom cars. Im not a fan of a lot of government, but

when things do affect my health, I think they should then pass laws. A

fine example of this is the smoking ban in CA. That was one of the best

laws passed in the last 10 years. If the government prevents me from

shooting and killing these stupid kids, then they better damn prevent

them from being little punks with their loud music in residential

neighborhoods. There are literally 20-30 people on my street who have

all complained and the cops do nothing.

Even though I don't like the loud bass machines, this article kinda

pissed me off with all of it's crap science which I'm not about to go

into. Someone that disagrees with the sentiment of that article could

rip into all the blunt lies and totally debunk the whole thing (who

cares if they are quoting sources - they just happen to be full of

crap). Sorry for ranting, but this is a perfect explanation for why

politics are so corrupt (now we're in a whole new realm of issues) - a

politician wouldn't have the slightest clue as to any of the falsehoods

and I could totally see them passing new laws based on falsehoods. So

it's a good thing (in our viewpoints) in this matter, but what about

the next matter that you don't agree with?

Anyways, sorry for ranting - I too believe music should be felt, not just heard.

Sorry, I was looking at the user reviews for that 12" audiobahn and this one tickled me: "SO LOUDS ITS ALMOST RETARDED.. i almost blew my ear drums wif theses.. by far the best sub ive eva bought"

Honestly, I think that ther is A LOT better bang for you buck for car

audio than this alpine audiobahn junk. That is, REAL car audio,

not this BOOOM BOOOOOOOM crap. You kinda know its junk when they

claim it eats 1500 watts RMS.....

I have a nice car system, I do jam out

on ocassion but I don't do it in residential neighborhoods or late at

night. Mostly on the highways and byways in route to and from

work. A very high quality head unit and quality

amplification, not quantity amplification apply here.

I agree here. I have a nice car system as well. I got an

Alpine head unit (the one with XM radio built in) fronting a 500 watt

JL Audio 500.5 amp, pushing some MB Quart components both front and

back as well as a 12 inch JL Audio W3 sub. Sounds very clean with

tight bass. It can crank if I want it to, and I've turned some

heads with it on occasion.

Hell, even in my crappy little beat-up old Mazada B2200 pick up, I have

a Clarion CD player fronting a 375 watt Alpine amp, powering some

Boston Acoustic CDX4e speakers and a 10 inch JL Audio W0 sub. The

only reason I bothered was because the POS Sony system that was in

there died, so I figure I'll spend a little money and put something

decent in there. Sounds pretty darn good for what it does.

I've had people tell me that I should crank the bass up more, or that I

need a bigger amp on the sub. I tell them that this system is an

SQ system, not an SPL system, and that I am perfectly happy with the

way it currently sounds.

But I also agree, I hate those damn boomcars thumping that rap crap

late in the night. And of course, those friggan

motorcycles. There are a couple on my street, including one that

is so friggan loud that it even hurts my ears when it passes my house,

while sitting in my own damn living room! That is just flat out

wrong! I keep meaning to find out who it is and file a complaint

with the police (not like they'll do anything, but still).

Sitting in my own damn house and it friggan hurts my ears! Like

was said above - put a damn muffler on that loud @$$ed piece of

$#!+!. Cannot even go for a hike along the river without

hearing that crap.

But, gotta admit, nice feeling when sitting at a light and some

d1ckhead pulls up beside me loudly thumping that crap next to me.

I hope that dumb@$$ likes Dream Theater as I bump that dial up a few

more turns clockwise! [6]

For me in my opinion, SPL for Cars, and SQ for home audio. SQ in cars does not match for me. I always tell my older bro to put SPL subwoofers in his car, but he likes the SQ.... He had like the best boston acoustics speakers in his car LOL. Boston acoustics Z6. His future subwoofers are JL w7. To bad he sold his sounds, his car looks really nice now.

Imho, anyone can make a spl car stereo system. It takes a lot more time and an extreme amount of patience and tuning to get sq in a car or truck. My silverado excab has an alpine 9815 deck a five channel amp two infinity 10" subs downfired for more accuracy and sq and active diy components up front. Its a constant tuning battle but thats half of the fun. I spend more time in my truck than my living room so a good system there makes sense. Mine is not a boom system but if i want to be a basshead (ie taking the kids out cruising) I can do it. I don`t like boom systems, I think they are tacky and unmusical.

From a fellow skibum - a-friggan-men!

It was a real beotch to get my car system tuned, but I think I

finally got it pretty much the way I want it to sound. Sucked

that I had to do it a second time, as I had to move my system from my

old car, after it got rear-ended this past winter, into my new car,

with different acoustic characteristics.

If I wanted a boom system, I could've just threw in a pair of 15

inchers and a couple big amps, dampened the trunk, and been done.

But that was not what I wanted. I wanted to try to recreate, as

much as my budget will allow me, the same type of sound quality that I

got at home in my car. I got a good 45 minute commute each way to

work (not to mention the hour and half during the winter to get up to

the ski area), thus I wanted to be able to take some good quality tunes

with me on the road. I think I achieved pretty much what I was

looking for. I have just as much fun trying music on my car

system as I do at home, to see how it sounds.

And I also agree that boom systems are tacky and unmusical. Not only that, but they are just downright annoying.
