AC3 RF Demodulator

Recommended Posts

I've got a Sony laserdisk player that I bought about 11 years ago. Haven't used it in a long time. Tried it once a few years aago with my DD receiver and something didn't sound right. Haven't used it since. It sounded great years ago with my pro-logic receiver. What is this RF demodulator thing and do I need one? Sorry for the question, I've generally been out of the hi-fi loop for several years now.

Most LD Players that have DD 5.1 (AC-3) require a seperate RF

demodulator in order

to playback the DD 5.1 (AC-3) surround tracks. A few top end models had

these

built in but most needed the outboard unit. Unlike DTS Laserdisc's the

DD 5.1 (AC-3) is inbeded in the Right channel analog track hence the

reason for this special bugger. If you have a AC-3 Coax output on the

back of you laserdisc player then you would need one of these in order

to play DD 5.1 (AC-3) laserdisc's. DTS encoded laserdisc's on the other

hand can stream the 5.1 digitaly thru the optical out.

Hope that helps.... so if you find one of these let me know, I need one[:o]

Thanks for the refresh Scoot. I need to get out my manuals and read them. Wouldn't mind watching some of my old LD's again.

If I run across a deal on a demoder I'll let you know. I did see a few on E-pay, but they were pricey.
