I have a pair of Kg4's that I've had for 16 years....last week I

heard a crackle on low basslines....which I've never ever

heard. turned out my 8" mid range's have torn their rubber

boots...all in the same place....I know my speakers are old...but I

love them, and hope they can be repaired....anyone have any

suggestions.....encouraging words?

I don't know where you're located, but companies like Speaker World in Pinellas Park (over an hour's drive from my house) are all over the country. Back in '91 the foam rubber surrounds around the 12" woofers of my JBL L112 monitors began to rot like on your KG4s...Speaker World took care of them, and a day or so later I had them home and sounding as good as new! I don't recall how much it cost, but it was far cheaper than buying brand new drivers, which IMO is unnecessary (unless there's more wrong with your drivers than foam rot).

There are even companies out there that have foam rubber surround kits that you can apply yourself to your deteriorated drivers and save yourself even more money. Usually you'll see these ads towards the back of such publications as Stereophile magazine...do a Google search and see what's in your vicinity.

Good luck.

thanks for the info...I'm going to google that right now...had no

idea there were independent repair companies out there for

speakers....usu. I'm very leery of "tv/vcr/electronics/computer" repair

shops...because the diagnostic fees on those items are usu. as much as

or more than a replacement....but hopefully I'll find a shop here in

San Diego .

thanks again, Josh
