Ki Choi
Hi, Someone earlier described the steps in how to take the top section of Belle Klipsch off for cleaning the insides but can't find it in the archive. Could you tell it to me again with the tools I might need? Thanks, Ki
sunburnwilly
Are you looking to get into the bass horn section ? If so , you have to go through the bottom . The top will come off easily with a small wrench or ratchet . What are you looking to clean ?
Ki Choi
SBW: Thanks for your reply. I am interested in taking the top section that are open to dust - clear the crossover, etc. and take the top plate off to be re-veneered. I will not need to get to the bass bin. I am trying to see about having the long 1/2" face section of the top plates face section above the grille redone if I can find a person who would do the work. Tom Mobley
what wood and finish are they? I might be able to do it for you, but the shipping from Seattle to Phoenix could make it tough. If you look in the back you should be able to see the nuts holding the top to the sides. The top will have studs sticking down out of the top through the corner blocks with nuts on the bottom. Just remove the nuts and lift the top off. It might hang up on the studs a little, if it does try rocking it gently side-to-side and front-to-back. Be sure to use a Sharpie or something else indelible to make the matching cabinets and tops. Post the serial numbers so we can see what the year and finish is. Matching older veneers can be problematic, sometimes they're sun-faded, have had an unknown stain applied or have had harsh chemicals used on them for cleaning. Some, like Brazilian Rosewood are just plain expensive and hard to find.
ZAKO
Hey you both look like me....
3dzapper
Ki, in addition to the four nuts, there is one screw on the horn bracket.. To remove the motor board from the top section, there are four phillips head screws along the sides. Rick
Ki Choi
Thank you guys. The Belle Klipsches are in Oiled Walnut finish but I will let you know their model and serial numbers. It would be ideal if I can remove the top sections on both speakers and send them to you for refinish. I guess as long as both speakers have newer veneers on the top front sections, it wouldn't be too bad. Will show you some photos tonight. Guess sick minds sometimes not only think alike but do look alike as well... Ki
Ki Choi
Guys: I went home for lunch and fixed my avatar with the shocking likeness to Maron (not that I didn't like the looks...but) and took few photos of the problem veneer. The previous owner's two year old wanted to see what was behind the veneer and did an excellent job at peering it off. I am not sure if the little one was satisfied with what he found though but fortunately his butt was protected by the Pampers. Ki
Ki Choi
One more thing... Their serial numbers are faded and can't make the letter out. It's 1R470 or 1P470 that put them mid to late '70s. Ki
3dzapper
Ki, If you want to try repairing the edges yourself, go to a local woodworker's store and pick up some Band-It edge banding and an exacto knife. The Band-It edging is prew-applied with a heat set glue. You need but to keep it aligned while pressing it with a hot flat iron on high and the steam off. It is also a good idea to put some craft paper or the like between the iron and the wood. With a little light sanding and boiled linseed oil, it should look like new. I may yet do that to mine but mine weren't as bad as yours just 1/2" missing on the ends of three edges. I used walnut filler instead. My wife likes it but, I can see the filler. Tom Mobley
I perceived that Ki was asking about removing the top plate, that's why I didn't mention about the motorboard, horns or crossovers. Nice thing about lifting the top only off is that you can continue using the speakers as usual while they're being repaired. Ki, email me at tmoble@gmail.com we'll see if an arrangement that works for both of us can be set up. Probably use a walnut veneer and stain it to match. I think that Klipsch used a dark walnut stain before oiling, and the walnut darkens with age. I have some of the pre-glued iron-on veneer tape already, but I'm not real thrilled with the quality of veneer they use to make that stuff. Also, the glue is a hot-melt stuff but it's not like the Tite-Bond II stuff usually used with the hot iron technique. It's real thick and doesn't set up very hard, it's kind of rubber-y if you get my meaning. I would likely acquire some real walnut veneer and go that way. A guy would want these to turn out very nice, walnut Belles are some of the nicest speakers offered by Klipsch and deserve to be trated as such. IMHO, that is.
