RMcKenny
I have recently purchased a Denon AVR-4802 and am trying to decide which type of speakers will be most appropriate for my THX EX surround back L & R. My home theater is rectangular with a width of 13' and a length of 18'. My mains are Chorus II and my center is a KLF-C7. I currently have a pair of RB-5's mounted in the rear corners about 7' up on the walls for my rear surrounds. I am looking at adding RS-3's on the sides and either RS-3's or RB-3's for the back surrounds. My plan would be to keep the RB-5's for use with music and then switch to the RS-3's(or RS-3's/RB-3's) for movies. I notice that THX's newest recommendation is for direct radiating speakers for the back surrounds which would favor the RB-3's. Denon's manual with the receiver shows dipoles for the back surrounds which would favor the RS-3's. Anyone have any knowledge or experience they could share? Thanks! TheEAR
Congrats on your reciever purchase.Very good quality reciever and plenty of features to boot. I would use the RB-3's as rear sourrounds. I dont like the disfused sound too much,I value precision more. Now you would(should)take both speakers home and try them, then you keep what sounds best to your ears. Good luck TheEAR(s) Now theears
myram
In my THX EX set up I have direct radiating speakers all around. As you can see from my equipment list below, I have the KG.5's on the side walls, and the KG1.5's on the rear walls. Personally, I don't listen to music in 7 channel surround....I use stereo or direct for music. I'd say go for the RB-3's or another pair of RB-5's. htxpert
Hi Direct Radiating speakers for the EX Channel is the THX-EX Spec You will also be able to use them with the new THX Ultra II format (2 direct Rad close together behind Listening area) I have my own version of this,A single center mounted directly above the listening positon that simulates hieght. Its tricky to set it up but when done the right way is mind blowing I am Hi-Fi
avman
i just downloaded an upgrade into my strda 777ES receiver which added 'virtual matrix 6.1', which-to the best of my understanding-adds a simulated center rear channel for dd-ex/dts-es encoded material! i played T-2,metal box edition, which has BOTH 6.1 formats, and gladiator, which has dts-es. WOW!! what a difference! i've been VERY pleased w/ the performance of my receiver/klipsch combo, and VERY pleased w/my ksps-6's; BELEIVE ME, this 6.1 format will test your rear speakers' capability, and they are performing very well! i'm also in awe of the upgradeability-and witnessing that process-of my 777ES. it was really cool watching the display of my receiver giving the status of the upgrade. TRULY this receiver is a real gem! avman. ------------------ 1-pair klf 30's c-7 center ksps-6 surrounds sony strda-777ES receiver upgraded to v.2.02 including virtual matrix 6.1 sony playstation 2 dishnetwork model 7200 dishplayer satellite receiver/digital bitstream recorder pioneer dvd player sharp 35"tv panamax max dbs+5 surge protector/power conditioner monster cable interconnects/12 gua.speaker wire a 'teens' sub coming!(RSW-15 LOOKIN'GOOD!) boa12
i really want that new 4802 but the things holding me back are that it isn't dsp/format software upgradable (thanks for reminding me about that avman ) & that adjustable low pass crossover is global instead of specific to each speaker group. on the other hand, i'm getting tired of waiting for everybody else to come out w/ a new receiver or pre/pro that matches those outstanding features of the 4802. where's the new 6/7.1 harmon kardon, aragon stageone, adcom, outlaw...? i can't wait much longer rm, so which do u like best for 2 channel dolby movies like from cable or dbs (if applicable)? prologic II or DTS Neo 6? ------------------ Klipsch KLF 30 (front) (2)KLF C7 (front center & rear center) Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-18 sub woofer Marantz SR-8000 receiver Acurus A200X5 power amp Sony DVP-C650D 5-disk cd/dvd player Sony Trinitron 27" stereo tv Toshiba hi-fi stereo vcr Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2100 digital cable box Monster HTS2500 & HTS1000 powercenters Boa's Listenin Lounge: Klipsch RF-3, RC-3 Sony STR-DE935 a/v receiver Kenwood KR-9600 AM/FM stereo receiver (vintage 1975) Russound AB-2 receiver switch to RF-3 Teac PD-D1200 5-disk cd changer Technics SL-1950 turntable/AT LS500 cartridge Technics dual cassette deck rock on! avman
hey y'all! i just saw integra (by onkyo) is showing their new receivers on their website: www.integrahometheater.com take a look at the features on the dtr 5.2;6.2;8.2; AND THE UPGRADEABLE 9.1. the 9.1 has a BEEFY torroidial power supply, and i believe is the closest comparison to the strda777ES sony receiver i have-albeit for more $$'s. are there other download-upgradeable receivers out there?? avman. ------------------ 1-pair klf 30's c-7 center ksps-6 surrounds sony strda-777ES receiver upgraded to v.2.02 including virtual matrix 6.1 sony playstation 2 dishnetwork model 7200 dishplayer satellite receiver/digital bitstream recorder pioneer dvd player sharp 35"tv panamax max dbs+5 surge protector/power conditioner monster cable interconnects/12 gua.speaker wire a 'teens' sub coming!(RSW-15 LOOKIN'GOOD!) avman
i've already installed one of these b&k pre-amps. looked good/sounded good, HOWEVER: one s-video input was bad (didn't work) and the remote control SUCKS! the '.2' is just a model number; no speaker/sub channel count intended. avman. ------------------ 1-pair klf 30's c-7 center ksps-6 surrounds sony strda-777ES receiver upgraded to v.2.02 including virtual matrix 6.1 sony playstation 2 dishnetwork model 7200 dishplayer satellite receiver/digital bitstream recorder pioneer dvd player sharp 35"tv panamax max dbs+5 surge protector/power conditioner monster cable interconnects/12 gua.speaker wire a 'teens' sub coming!(RSW-15 LOOKIN'GOOD!) boa12
thanks for the info av. yea that remote for the ref 30 does seem to be the weak link. would miss my marantz remote most definitely then as it even controls the jog dial (FF,etc.) on my sony dvdp. could always get a pronto to replace. & B&K does have a 5 yr. warranty.
