Yup, John Ford's Drums Along The Mohawk, 1939. That's John Carradine as the Tory ranger Caldwell, the scene where Caldwell and another Tory step out from behind the trees, Caldwell blows a whistle and then Indians appear from behind all the trees. Scared the bejeezus out of me when I was a kid. It was Ford's first Technicolor picture and has recently been gorgeously restored by Fox and released on DVD.

In 17and82 a real Brit named Caldwell led a group of Tory rangers (including the infamous Simon Girty) and Great Lakes Indians from Detroit on a raid into Kentucky and bushwacked the Kentuckians at Blue Licks inflicting a disastrous defeat on them.
