damonrpayne
I was thinking of getting this and wonder if anyone owns one? http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16827131351 The DVD burning is actually less important to me than drive speed, I like to be able to install things fast. DrWho
They make cd-roms that read at 72x I believe. I know it's gotta be faster than 52x because that's how fast my cd-burners go. (I can rip a CD in under a minute) []
damonrpayne
Well I was thinking that a 52x or 72x drive may not really be running at that speed due to being limited by the IDE bus, so that's why I was looking at a SATA drive in particular. Shade
Didn't know SATA burners were out already. Pretty cool, although I don't think that the IDE interface has been much of a bottleneck. SATA would be nice for keeping the cabling neat & out of the way. Personally, I'd go for a Pioneer, Lite-on, or NEC. Same speed, half the price. tenorman
I have this drive in a machine I built earlier this year. It does seem to install software faster than my brother's or friend's machines which are still using IDE drives. The Plextor may cost a little more but to me it was worth it. That's a lot of money. Forget this one, and get the NEC-3540 DL DVD-RW instead. Only $35 and it's about as fast as optical drives get. TheEAR
This is nothing new the PX716SA is on the market since many many many moths,I have two in my main PC.The SATA interface does nothing over the IDE one.The PX716A performs just as well.I got the SATA drives to eliminate IDE cables in the case. And Plextor optical drives are THE VERY BEST you can buy,I still have my UltraPlex 40X CD ROM and the 12/10/32 CDRW,after all the years of service they still work A1! LiteOn is garbage, they work great for a few months and then the flimsy transport and parts give up.The first LiteOn batches were great, now they are just cheap. For inexpensive DVD burners NEC and pioneer are the best choices,no reason to go LiteOn.As the price gap is so slim.
