whell
When I first got my HK 730 about a year and a half ago, the first thing I noticed was that the FM reception was much worse than I expected, and much worse than any other reciever of similar vintage. My Marantz 2020b ran rings around it. However, i did not regard this as "normal performance", and decided to have it checked by a qualified tech. Since returning from service, and a full alignment, the FM reception is MUCH improved, and nearly equals my Sansui 9090 which has a 4 gang tuner section. If strong FM performance from your 730 is a requirement, I suggest seeking out a specialist in FM tuner service and repair, and have the receiver checked out. You might be quite surprsied by how well that unit is capable or performing.
Mark Hardy
Michael: While it may well be that your 730 needs attention, may I suggest that you don't give up without trying a proper FM dipole (indoor!) antenna. Make one yourself out of scrap 300-ohm twinlead (I can send you some if you don't have any). Tune it to midband if you wish, or, tune it to the station you'd most like to listen to OR tune it for 'college stations' (< 92 MHz)... see link below: http://www.northcountryradio.com/Articles/fmdip.htm edit: oops, that link is for a 75-ohm dipole. Either way, worthy of consideration IMNSHO.
Mark Hardy
ummm... here's a 300 ohm dipole link: http://www.kgnu.org/howtohear/antenna.html
TommyC
http://www.northcountryradio.com/Articles/fmdip.htm That is pretty cool. I made one, using some scrap 300ohm we had at work, tuned to my favorite Hard to get jazz station (KNTU 88.1) and after some experimenting with positioning I am getting it loud and clear! Not too bad for free!
