Ciscokid
Hi, I have a pair of Klipsch HS-2 with built in multi-tap transformers with a voltage range of 25v to 70.7v. Can these speakers be connected directly to an amplifier like normal speakers? Do I need to worry about setting the voltage? Thanks DannyG
WMcD
I think you'll find a line transformer at the input to the speaker. My guess is that this is just the equivalent of what would be added "outboard" if you wished to add this feature. I think the output of the transformer feeds a normal 8 ohm input to the rest of the speaker. This may be a bit complicated if it mounted on a crossover board. Can you send a photo? In any event, if you can disconnect the secondary of the transformer (the output) you should be able to tap into the 8 ohm circuit. The above is an educated guess. By the way, the 25 and 70 volt distribution systems have a step up transformer at the amp, a long run of wire, and then a step down "line" transformer at the speaker. The voltage on the line is higher than with a regular set up. But current is therefore lower. Lower current in long wire runs is good because the loses in the long wire run are called IR losed. The voltage drop is caused by the current (I) times the resistance ® in the wire. V=I*R. Ohm's law. We're pretty much stuck with the resistance in the wire (unless the wires are made thick). So the only way to reduce the loss is to decrease the current. Gil
e34rob
I just went through the same dilemma. If the box has HS2-TR on it it means that the speaker has been rewired wirthout the transformer. This makes the speaker ready for a normal 8 ohm connection. If not, you need to by-pass the transformer. Enjoy, Rob
Ciscokid
These speakers are in fact HS-2TR. Thanks for the help. DannyG
PhilH
Ciscokid: If you need help disconnecting that transformer, call Klipsch Tech Support at 1-800-KLIPSCH. Matt or Trey have lots of experience in this procedure and may be able to help you over the phone. PhilH
