Allan Songer
Latin jazz drummer and conga player Ray Barretto passed away this morning. I was lucky enough to hear him live a couple of times--one with Lou Donaldson in NYC about 20 years ago and just a few years back with Kenny Burrell here in L.A. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/obit_barretto;_ylt=Al3uY5hS3.JcPKdQoenTVOpxFb8C;_ylu=X3oDMTA5aHJvMDdwBHNlYwN5bmNhdA--

Among so many contributions I can never forget the suave backdrop he provided for Gene Ammons and group on "Blue Gene", an LP I still play often, up to more recent vintage work with Steve Turre. RIP!
