My experience hasn't ben as dramatic as Andy's, but that probably says more about my damaged hearing from all those shoulder-height small explosions I used to endure. Brighter...at first not really to my liking (I was used to the old, "soft" sound, I guess). Much better stage, no gaps. More detail, without a doubt. After a few hours, I'm getting used to them. Very nice. Hilliard Ensemble/Jan Garbarek "Officium" now playing. A VERY demanding recording that will expose flaws. Sounds nice. Transporting. Klipschguy Posted March 11, 2006 Author Share Posted March 11, 2006 Thank you, Meagain. The cabinets are walnut, oil. I used Danish oil with a couple ounces of turpentine and stain added. I use minwax dark walnut stain, but you could mix in a little minwax mahogany with the dark walnut for a little redder finish (if desired). Or you could use minwax cherry for a more subtle effect. Since your cabinets are aready stained from the factory, the added stain will only enhance the look of the existing stained veneer (mine were already kind of red and still are). I think the top of your Khorn is stained inside. Use that area as a test area before doing the rest of the cabinets. This picture of my veneer is pretty accurate. My KG4s who've seen only some lemon oil perhaps once a year since '84-85 have a bit of red to them and I like the tone. I wonder if my khorn walnuts were exposed to light and a natural oxidation occurred. IDK if walnut darkens with age like cherry. What would be nice is if I could suck the current stain out of the walnuts and start from scratch - fresh. Even if I could pull out a bit - that would be nice cuz they are very dark to me. pmsummer Posted March 12, 2006 Share Posted March 12, 2006 After about 20 hours of "listening" with my new/old caps, I'm very pleased with the sound. It's about 6:30 on Sunday morning, and I'm playing chamber music at a low volume... but it's all there. That's what I first heard in Cornwalls years ago: they not only sounded great at higher volumes, they sounded great at low volumes, too. KH's, LS's, and Cornwalls are the only speakers I've heard that can do this. I know there are others, but I've not heard them.
