so ya...It's been a while since I've gotten into the video scene and

it's about time I got back in the loop (I've been noticing there's a

lot of things I'm not finding familiar).

So where do you guys go to get your video info? I'm looking for some websites that are preferably not marketing mumbo jumbo.

And since it's annoying when people ask questions without doing

homework, allow me to post a few stuff I've come across

already...haven't read it all, but I'll get to it eventually:

http://www.ultimateavmag.com/videoprojectors/

http://www.ultimateavmag.com/flatpaneldisplays/

http://sbinfocanada.about.com/cs/beforeyoubuy/bb/projector.htm

http://ultimateavmag.com/features/106ces1/

http://ultimateavmag.com/features/705screens/

Well that's the best I can do for now...I need to do some more reading

and get some more terminology that I can use for googling.

If you were building a room around the video system, what kind of

projector/screen/size room would you go for? And what if front

projection wasn't an option, then what do you go with? I'm trying to

get back on the cutting edge of video so let's just ignore price

altogether. It's easy to downscale to a financially feasible approach

when you know what the ideal is.

Well, last trip to the audio/visual store I looked at the 1080P DLP Mitsubshi's and they were outstanding. Looked at the Runco $15,000 1080P projection setup in 2.35 x 1 screen and it wasn't bad but not as bright as the HDTV's and not as much contrast. Looked at the Sony SXRD 1080P with the Sony DVR demo and it was outstanding. Looked at the 4 projectors that cost about a zillion bucks in Damon's joints and was totally unimpressed. To see what is happening now you have to go to the AVS forum and look under your city. Currently they are voicing expletives about cable, satellite, and OTA. Is there anything else? The High Definition situation is total chaos for the laymen with the 1080P upconvert through the HDMI, etc. China, India, Russia, Taiwan, Germany, France are all coming out with their own codecs to work on standard DVD discs. Avelink and JVC have players that will play HD-WMV, M2t, TS, TP, JPEG files (2200 x2200) burned as a data file to standard DVD discs and dual layer discs. Bluray (Sony) & HD-DVD (Toshiba) are introducing players and burners for the new media, along with purchaseable movies. The Avelink and JVC players quality is outstanding but will only do 720P and 1080i. JVC D-VHS tape is still here and still cheap and still outstanding quality. Sony has some nice projectors that really kick butt for about $30,000.00. I currently have the JVC D-VHS VCR and the JVC SRDVD-100U player that play's my m2t files right out of my video editing software. I get about 30 minutes on a 4.7 disc and double that on a dual layer. It's as High-def as high def gets. Only problem is all of my friends and relatives don't know what to buy as the choices are numorous. So they are still watching analog. I have burned the Microsoft HD-WMV sample files with Nero to standard DVD-R and Dual layer +R discs with no loss in quality. Nero burns them as standard data files which the Avelink and JVC players post up as files, then you highlight the file with the remote and hit enter, wallah high def. These players will also connect via network cat5 to your computer and play from your computer. Taiwan was PRing that they were coming out with a tripple layer standard disc for 1.5 hr movies. Something in this market is going to pop but who knows what. The Russian/Indian consortium was PRing a 40 gig standard disc.HVT (300gig holographic disc) and HVX (1000gig disc) PRing for 2007 intro. There is no 1080P video on the broadcast scene but they are touting that the 1080p sets upconvert everything to 1080p and make everything look better. You as the customer, how can you loose!.HA HA. And now, here's the rest of the story---I can't stand it anymore. signoff.

I do ISF calibration and have had the opportunity to look at most of the new projectors, RPTV's, and Plasma's that are currently available. My favorite for a reasonable budget is the same technology in 2 different flavors.

Sony and SXRD

If you want FP, the SXRD projector for $10k is tough to beat. It is bright enough to be enjoyed in many lighting situations that I would have never installed a projector in before, but where it shines is still in a low-light room where you can turn crank the auto-iris down tight and further enhance the blacks and contrast.

If you don't have space/budget for this piece, the 60" RP SXRD set is great as well. The picture quality on this piece is amazing.

Both of these devices run a little blue out of the box, and can stand to be calibrated, but no worse than most of the LCD/DLP solutions out there.
