formica
Just looking for some feed back on home theatre seating... I started looking around and have not even decided on whether to go with specialised HT seats, regular recliners, or regular sofas. Each has it's advantages and disadvantages... specialised HT seats: great comfort, most flexible, costliest, and hardest to move around regular recliners: great comfort, mid priced, and easier to move around regular sofas: less comfort, least expensive, and easy to move around I've looked at Palliser's Derrick series, and Jaymar's 151 (?) series... as both these are Canadian made and will cost me less than a similar product from Lane or the like. I'm just looking for general feedback on manual vs electric... mircofibre vs leather.... black vs red.... and HT seating vs regular seating... etc... What are you guys using... and what do like or dislike about it? ROb PS: if i go speciallised HT seating it would be in a 1-2-1 layout
Jay481985
microfiber as I have leather in my car and home. Lets just say in the heatwave its not so great. Also if the leather is thin it tends to sag overtime making it look ugly. I did see something cool at audioholics http://www.audioholics.com/productreviews/avhardware/cuddlebag-kiddie-bagp1.php http://www.cuddlebag.com/ I thought it was quite cool http://www.audioholics.com/productreviews/avhardware/cuddlebag-kiddie-bagp1.php'>
Buckeye_Nut
Woah.... That's totally subjective. There is no best choice. It all depends on what you want for your room. Whatever you do, make sure it's absolutely comfortable because comfort should always be top priority. If you cant kick back in front of your system for a music/movie marathon and be absolutely comfortable, then what's the point? LOL I also dont understand how a sofa is necessarily less comfortable? Maybe some designs obviously arent, but there are plenty of good sofas that would rate pretty highly for movie marathon purposes.
Jay481985
I guess the factor of not being able to adjust and lean back a bit?
DrWho
I prefer a reclining couch as I find it the most comfortable and versatile...it allows the option of cramming more people on the couch than there are seats and you can choose between all sorts of ways to lay down and sit. I suppose some would argue it is also more condusive to cuddling as well [] which can't hurt if you're in the market for a lady friend. colterphoto1
You HAVE to recline I have the Coasters, which is only a two position, it gets a bit crampy. The Berkliner electric recliners are infinitely adjustable, but are so cushy comfy that I fall asleep everytime. I think having a double 'snuggle' seat with no arm between would be a good idea for couples. I just have four singles, there's no hope for me. Buckeye_Nut
See, that's my point.....LOL Who says you have to buy a couch with a firm back that wont let you lean back? Get one of those with big cushy, fluffy cushions, and you can lean back to your hearts content[] Not to mention some sofas also double as recliners. Me personally?? I use a big plush recliner for my primary seating, but I see a row of 3 theater seats in my future once they need to be replaced.
formica
Yeah, I realise there is no magic answer... but the feedback so far is great. A little more background information.... I agree that having no separation (arms) between some seats is better for cuddling, and I was looking four-seat combo, which would consist of a love seat in the middle attached to two single chairs on either end. Yes, I am a hopeless romantic... My room is 16ft wide... so I figured 10' front row would be reasonable... and the above combo was about 8" over that with wedge arms. I'll be reusing the ugly sofa in the pics as a rear seat BTW... which would give room for about 7 people in a single sitting. I won't be building a platform for it, given it would be difficult to store... but I do have a concept (in my head) to raise the sofa. I also mentioned ease to move around, simply because I do use my room for other gatherings for which I don't need 10' wide seating facing the wall.[] Any of you guys move your "seating" around once it was set up? I tried the electric recliners.... and the infinite adjustability is really nice, but so is the price tag that goes with them. Several manual ones I tried did seem to have infinite positions too (think simple glider), but no locked positions. In other words they seem to depend on how you sit in them... how does that feel after a couple of hours? ROb
colterphoto1
One thing is for sure, they don't make a very good conversation 'pit'. I dare say that theatre chairs are for just that. Although my Coaster set is arranged on a bit of an arc, even with two people sitting in the far chairs, your necks get tired after just a few minutes conversation. So I'd pretty much forget the idea of using these in a multipurpose room unless there is lots of room for other chairs say at a right angle to the theatre cluster. With mine, they do interlock together and remember that the arms are shared, so if the thought crossed your mind of moving them around for different seating postions, remember that most of the units would be 'one-armed'. In that case I'd spring for separate recliners or modular seating that would be flexible. Michael

formica
So I'd pretty much forget the idea of using these in a multipurpose room unless there is lots of room for other chairs say at a right angle to the theatre cluster. Yup... there is... but personally would like to rotate the whole HT Seat Set on rare occasions so it would face the room with it's back against the sidewall. Have you tried moving (sliding) them around as a single lot? (Carpet or hard wood?) Or do you really have to disassemble the grouping to do so. How hard is that? Getting a regular recliner sofa is an option, but I would loose a place (6 vs 7) and only the two end places recline. OTOH... it would be less expensive not that i recomend it but me & my power wheelchair always front & center I figured that much... and it's easy to move around to boot...
