Allan Songer
Duke Jordan, born the first of April 1922, died in Denmark this week. He was 84 years old and was actively performing until very recently. Born in New york he started his carreer in the 1940s in Al Cooper's Savoy Sultans and the Roy Eldridge Big Band. In 1946 Charlie Parker heard him playing and invited him to join his group, wivh included Miles Davis, Max Roach and Tommy Potter. He played with Charlie Parker up to 1948 and is to be found with other beboppers like Sonny Stitt, Stan Getz, Gene Ammons and Cecil Payne. Some of his best playing can be found on the Tina Brooks classic "True Blue" on Blue Note. As he was an accompanist and seldon heard in solo performance, he is not very well known. His compositions became better known when settled in Denmark late 1970s and made a string of great trio and quartet recordings for SteepleChase.
