Hey Allan... LP question

My daughter's boyfriend was here for dinner last night (so was she...), and he brought an lp for me to have a listen to. My turntable is offline at the moment, but wanted to know if you have heard of Arthur Blythe. Sax player. This album is on Columbia, and called 'Basic Blythe'. Cuts include Autumn in New York (part one), Lenox Avenue Breakdown, Heart to heart, As of yet, Ruby my dear, Faceless woman, Autumn in New York (part two).

Musicians listed are: Arthur Blythe-Alto Sax, John Hicks- Piano, Anthony Cox- Bass, Bobby Battle- Drums,... has strings as well. Recorded 1988.

Just curious. I still have it. He left it with me. Perhaps he thinks it will sway me into likeing him a bit more... [;)]

I don't like a lot of Blythe's stuff on Columbia in the 80's--they tried to make Arthur Blythe a star (a good thing) by clogging up his records with strings and other annoyances (a bad thing).

I heard Blythe live back in May at the tiny Cafe Metropol here in LA--the place holds about 40-50 people! He has one of the biggest, fattest tones on the tenor EVER and the precision with which he plays is sometimes astonishing. I think he was too "free" a player to have ever become a big commercial success, but he has made some really great and really accessible albums over the years, the most famous being that first release on Columbia back in the late 70's--In the Tradition, an LP of standards that ANYONE who loves music will be able to "get."

I think I'll pull it out for a spin right now! It's been at least 2-3 years since this one's been on the old Thorens!

Thanks Allan-- your opinions on these sorts of things help sort the wheat from the chaff, even allowing for different tastes in music. I'll have to give this a listen soon, if just so I can tell the daughter's boyfriend I gave it a listen.
