A/V receivers w/ best surround extraction modes for 2-chl. music

Perhaps this should be in a different forum, but here goes:

Is there anything approaching a concensus here, as to which A/V receiver (or sub-2K pre/pro) manufacturer has the best, i.e., the most natural and musical sounding ambience extraction mode for reproducing 2-channel recordings through a 5.1 or 6.1 channel set-up? I am not talking about ambience synthesis; just extraction.

I have seen a number of good comments about Denon gear, but what about Onkyo, Marantz, Harmon-Kardon, etc.? I suspect they may score well in this area also, but would like to hear some owner remarks.

Anyone familiar with my occasional rants might recall my fondness for equipment manufactured by a certain large electronics maker from Japan. (hint: starts with S, ends with y Smile.gif) Truth is though, they just don't score too well in this respect, although they are begining to incorporate DPL-II in their gear, for whatever that is worth (it seems to be getting somewhat mixed reviews for music).

All opinions appreciated.

I'd research the net, there is got to be something

out there to suit your application in that

price range.

(Sorry, but I don't know a helluva lot about

Extraction modes on A/V receivers.)

Heck, most consumer brand named products

have cheap to top line in their components.

Pioneer,Sony.

I don't think anyone has a ***** about the Sony

SACD player.

And if they do, I'd think they are misled.

It all depends on the cash you want to throw out.

(You gotta spend a few bucks for a high quality

receiver.)

My first CD player was a Sony portable D2 player

(circa 1986).

Sounded pretty bad by todays standards but great then.

Tough too.(This thing took a full force slam into

a floorboard of '66 Econoline van I had, that would

have shattered any newer one to peices. But it

just fired back up and kept going.)

Ain't nuthin' wrong with Sony.

THANX!

fwiw, I choose the NAD T 761 receiver for similar reasons.

NAD develops their receivers with the "Music First" approach to A/V receiver design. In fact, they only incorporate three switchable modes: 1) Stereo (2 channel), 2) EARS (Enhanced Ambience Recovery System) Music surround mode (5x-channel music) & 3) Pro Logic. DTS & DD 5.1 modes are automatically sensed and switched by the processor, when the receiver detects their signal input. I don't have all the DSP bells and whistles like other units, but I'm VERY pleased with the 2 channel musical performance of my unit. The 5-channel EARS mode is musical as well. The unit only has 80 wpc, but it does generate clean high current.
