filmboydoug
Bob, does a cap have to actually be leaking to smell, or can one stink from just going bad?

boom3
I'm not Bob, but I can answer that for electrolytics...yes, they have particular smell when they leak...like a new, intact electrolytic, but much more intense
filmboydoug
was it Bob's avatar, that led you to ask this question of him ...??? That and he knows more about caps than anyone else I can think of. One of the guys over on AK has a preamp that stinks so bad upon power up that it drives him out of the room. He pulled the cover and there is no visible cap leakage.
BroMike
Bob, does a cap have to actually be leaking to smell, or can one stink from just going bad? I'm sorry but this is a closely guarded trade secret, but it sort of smells like money. BroMike
Daddy Dee
Now that is funny!
D-MAN
I got news - that ain't a cap that is stinking! Caps typically fail as an open once that much electrolyte leaks out. The correct answer is the insulation on a transformer winding. Expect smoke next, then fire. DM
