Members Weekly Music Recommendations-Dec. 4

It's a new month and Christmas comes early for a certain stalwart member of the Forum.

Congratulations
to the Old Buckster himself who finally broke his record-breaking
losing streak to walk away with a Klipsch tie-tac, a BS button and
because it's a holiday, a peel off, stick on, Klipsch logo.

Format's simple: Name of artist or group, name of album, type of music
as best you can (rock, blues etc.), and recording format (cd, lp etc.)

As usual I'll start it off with:

Claude Bolling, "Concerto for Classic Guitar and Jazz Piano, lp, classical/jazz

This
is one of those many lps produced back in the day when the console
crowd was moving to seperates and needed some crossover tunes that
appealed to both camps. Here you have a quiet sort of shootout
between a classical quitarist and a jazz piano. Nothing
earth-shattering here but just plain enjoyable by itself or with a good
book. Very well recorded too.

so what do you have to share this week?

What artist was originally wanted for the closing act for Woodstock? (You know, that little weekend concert in upstate New York back in 1969). Well, Roy Rogers of course. They wanted him and Dale to sing "Happy Trails". Roy was busy so they settled for Jimi Hendrix. This DVD was released in 2005 but I did not see it until this week when I purchased it. So if it has already been reviewed, sorry, but I'm not stopping.

As one of only 12 teenagers in the United States who DID NOT attend the concert I have always been fascinated with Woodstock. And this DVD shows Jimi Hendrix' performance in its entirety. Well almost all of it. Considering the conditions, limitations, short budget and general state of rock in the day its a wonder we have what we do but this will not disappoint.

DVD One: The original filmmaker's copy of the show. 16mm color film.

Message to Love

Spanish Castle Magic

Red House

Lover Man

Foxey Lady

Jam Back at the House

Izabella

Fire

Voodoo Child (Slight Return)

Star Spangled Banner

Purple Haze

Woodstock Improvisation

Villanova Junction

Hey Joe

Disc Two has the same cuts plus Hear My Train A Comin'

This disc (2) was shot by a 22 year old student with a Sony CV 1/2" video recorder on a tripod. He snuck up on stage and set up his camera 15 feet from where Hendrix would stand. There are interruptions caused by the limitations of the video in the day, filled in by the 16mm color film for a seamless performance. But from an archival view this is priceless. Several weeks later the student was hitchhiking and got picked up by a driver who was a friend of Hendrix, they talked about the video and wound up showing it to Hendrix at his house. Hendrix enjoyed the ability to screen his performance and thanked the young man for letting him view the video. The videographer left and stored the tapes for three decades before making them available for this DVD.

If you like Jimi Hendrix, Woodstock, classic rock or any combination find this DVD. I found it at Wal-Mart of all places for $9.74. Get it. You'll pay $10 for a 12-pack and this will last a lot longer.

The announcer introduces the band as the Jimi Hexdrix Experience but Jimi corrects him and says they are a band of gypsies. The band is:

Jimi Hendrix Guitar, Vocals

Billy Cox Bass, Backing Vocals

Mitch Mitchell Drums

Juma Sultan Percussion

Larry Lee Rhythm Guitar

Jerry Velez Percussion

The performance is historical plus it is pure Hendrix. I can't say anymore. This performance showcases his improvisational skills to their fullest. There are many extras including interviews of band members and producers of the show.

All in all I think it was better for Hendrix to do the close than Roy!!!

Why Thank You for breaking a bad streak for me......It has been awhile, hasn't it?.... Streak broken......time to do a recommendation........So, let's do a DVD again..............When I ordered Delbert last month, to get free shipping, I needed to buy one more to qualify, so this is what I picked...............

BAD COMPANY in Concert.............Merchants of Cool............2002.......................DVD..........140 minutes..............

I just ordered this disc without looking to see who was on it with Paul Rodgers...........I am a sucker for Paul Rodgers, always liked his voice, the Professional Front Man, if you will, you always know his voice when you hear it. There is never any doubt who is singing, Paul is a Star, and the only other former band member is, Drummer, Simon Kirk. No Mick Ralphs, might not have bought this DVD had I known that, but I did buy it, and NO Boz Burrel on Bass, but the people they chose to replace them, do just fine. It's really about Paul anyway, the man can sing, and he rips through a 17 song set with no problem. All the songs that need to be there, are there, and then some. This is just a good set of songs that kinda take you back in time, for alittle bit, and bye the time the disc is done, your glad you have it. Solid Rock songs, done by a solid Rock Band, and it is a good band. I'll admit I wasn't happy at first, NO Mick Ralphs,. but the more you listen, the less you miss him. Paul's Vocals, and Simon's dead-on drumming can, and do carry the show, and that's good enough for me. If you are a Bad Company Fan, give this disc a try, in the end, you will like it.........not a wates of time or money, nice addition to any collection.................

Audioslave- Revelations

cd

IT ROCKS!

Was Chris Cornell a great addition to that group, or what? Much better than Rage against the Machine, in my opinion..............

Oh yeah Chris is one of my favorite singers. He has alot of soul, and not in the traditional sense of the word for a gritty hard rocker.

Isn't his wife his manager too? He does have one of those voices, if you know ROCK music, you know that voice the minute you hear it, you know it's Chris Cornell. I think he could be a big star................I don't know if it will be with Audioslave, or another Band further down the road, but his career has just begun........................

Yes I beleive his wife is, or at least was at one point ( I could be wrong). I'm not sure if he is still with the same woman. I heard Chris will be making a solo album early 2007, and he recently done an acoustic version of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean", and of course the theme song for Casino Royale. I do love Audioslave, but Chris can't be boxed into one sound. He just keeps growing as an artist, and I don't think one band will work for him. Chris does some very nice simplistic rythym guitar that compliments his voice greatly. I heard when Temple of the Dog was being made the boys from Pearl Jam who helped play along were showed the chords. They were like these two chords right? It was so easy they couldn't believe it was the song, and then he sang and it just floored them, and they were on it.. A Soundgarden reunion would be great though.
