leerocker
Are there any new models that output the new DD and DTS formats via the analog outs rather than via optical? I really am looking forward to hearing how these sound but dont want to buy an HD DVD player AND a new receiver just to be able to do so. Thanks and happy holidays
wuzzzer
Do you mean having discrete outputs for 5.1 sound? If so, the Toshiba HD-A1 has them but I don't know of any other player that does.
dougdrake
I do not believe there are any HD-DVD players available right now that decode DTS HD Master Audio - the ones that deal with it at all pass it to the AVR for decoding, via HDMI. Also the Toshiba HD-XA2 and Onkyo's new player has full discrete outputs
leerocker
Thanks for the info. Looks like it's only the expensive players, except for the HD-A1 which can be found used pretty cheap. One thing i didnt know is that it only outputs HD signals over the HDMI, not component video. Are all the new players that way?
wuzzzer
You can get HD (1080i or 1080p depending on the player) output from component video on an HD-DVD player but only for HD-DVDs. It won't upconvert standard DVDs over component. So, what you can do if you're going to be watching a standard DVD is access the player's menu and choose 480i or 480p output and then your standard DVDs will play over component. Guest srobak
Or you could use HDMI, which will pass on the up-converted output from (most) decks.

Except his question was whether or not he could get the HD signal via component. Probably, like me, doesn't have HDMI on his TV. I have my HD-DVD player hooked up via component, and it gets 1080i (which is my tv's max resolution). Also, the HD-A35 has 5.1 analog outputs. Bret_Salyer
The Panasonic BD10A Bluray player has component and 7.1 analog outs. At first I thought HDMI was the shtuff with only one cable to hook up until I tried to use video select, and multizone features, etc... Since you can't use these features with HDMI, I think it mostly sucks.
