How about a ride around Lake Monroe? Maybe over the causeway, and stop at the scenic overlook at the dam on the south end? Tour through campus and then head to Nashville? Just some thoughts. :) Beautiful scenery and great roads out there. We can beep at Mellencamp as we go by his house next to the causeway. Hell - drop him a line - he will probably want to go on the ride with us :)

Man.....did those pictures of your ZX9R bring back some memories. I owned a '94 for over 10 years before it handed duty over to my FJR1300. Honestly, that's one bike I wished I'd kept. It came into my life at a point that I needed a serious diversion. Road that thing all over the eastern U.S. and west a few miles. You know...even though my FJR is more comfy on the other side of a 500 mile day and can carry more than I need, I could ride the "9" just as much in any given day. 'Course - at the end of two 500 mile days I no longer have to lube a chain in a hotel parking lot. LOL......

And for those of you who aren't as observant.....srobak not only doesn't have any chicken strips on that back tire, but methinks I see a bit of blueing on that rubber. Translation - the man's been tugging on the loud handle of that thing in the twisties!! Nice.........

Oh - and while you got the motor out....get out that air grinder and polish that frame ya lazy git!! LOL.......

Back to the thread......sure wish I could make the pilgrimage. I'd definitely stay over and do the ride.

Tom

ps: That evolution of man is partially correct in that a Concours IS a cave man motorcycle. The part that's missing is the transition from a Concours to a "proper" sport touring motorcycle like a FJR or ST or..... LMAO

Tom...

Thanks for the message - cool stuff. I was working for Kawi when the ZX9 came out for 94, and almost considered trading my ZX7 in on one. I opted not to, and Kept the 7 for a while instead. They made a lot of revisions for the C series of the 9 - especially in suspension, frame rigidty, and transmission. I am very happy with mine and plan to keep it a while :)

The lack of required maintenance is one of the things I like so much about the ST, and it is perfect for long trips because of that. But yes - the fun of a sportbike does need to be had once in a while :D Funny you mention the tires - Those are actually Z rated sport-touring tires. I found the combination recommended on an FJR site actually :) The ZX9 is a heavy beast (473) - especially by today's sportbike standards. I have a few too many lbs as well, and with all that in mind, a couple years ago I started pursuing tires from the aspect of a sport-touring vs. a supersport, as I was doing a lot of highway miles, and the overall ride was out of standard sportbike weight classes. Basically - people with heavier bike who still wanted to do some spirited riding amidsts their cruises. I used to have Metzler M1s on the bike, and when the rear burned up I put a Dunlop D220 on there instead. The result was a much more confident and stable ride, not to mention a lot more comfortable as well. I couldn't believe the difference - and no matter how hard I leaned the bike over - it never felt remotely close to the threshold of it's abilities. It felt a lot more of a supersport tire than the M1 rear did - but when combined with the M1 front - it was amazing. More research yielded combining the D220 rear with the M3, M6 or ZO3 (I think) front - which is what I have on there now, and while I do prefer its more linear, rounded cross-section - its confidence has not felt as good as the M1, so I may go with the M3 or M6 for the next front.

The lack of chicken strips is not so much from speedy turns as it is from repeatedly riding the twistiest and most technical roads I can find in northern Illinois. Rides into south Wisconsin as well as back roads out to Starved Rock are a regular weekend event for me... that's how I racked up 18.000 miles on it last year alone :) Speed is fun and all - especially when I was younger - but now I prefer more technical riding, and the stability of that beast combined with some very nice low-end torque allows for much fun on switchbacks and such, so long as you don't mind some serious muscling around of the bike.

The bike is actually back together now. New chain and sprocket went on Saturday, motor went in last weekend, forks were done Sunday, and all the plastic went on afterwards. I rode to work this morning even :) Ahhhhh it's so nice.

If you come out to the Pilgrimage, you are welcome to take a spin on it for flashback sake :) The evolution of man image is the only one I could find... and I meant it more as any bike in general - but yeah, if I ever find one with a proper sport-tour on it, I will certainly put it up instead :)

If this is going to be on Sunday afternoon, I will probably bug out at 47 & 65 and head back towards the big windy... Looks cool otherwise. Only been to Crawfordsville once before. :) Looking forward to it.
