Surround speaker placement

Will it be okay to place the RS-7s NOT behind the listener's ears but above them? Meaning, could I place the RS-7s 2-3 feet horizontally away from my ears and then 7-8 feet vertically on the side-walls from my ears?

What I am basically asking is that is it okay NOT to place surrounds slightly behind you?

It is not the ideal position according to either the THX standard, nor the Sony surround sound music standard.

Usually if you are going to mount surround speakers above your head they would be bipolar and even then slightly behind you.

Is there any way to try it out before permanently placing them?

2 * Heresy 2 (mains)

2 * Homemade horn speakers (rears)

1 * REL Strata 3 sub

Accuphase E211 amp.

Tube monoblocks with separate pre-amp (solid state).

Marantz CD6000 player

Sony NS900 SACD/DVD player

Stax Headphones

Humax 5400 digital satellite receiver

Sharp Video

32" Sony flat screen 16:9 TV

Mogami interconnects

Silver Synergistic speaker cable

Sorry, but what is bipolor? cwm13.gif

Secondly, I will most likely be able to place them 1-2 feet behind me and 7-8 feet vertically on the side walls. Will this be okay?

My Sony has a setting for surround in the speaker placement section. It allows you to tell the receiver where your speakers are. Behind, to the side, high or low. This helps out with equalization alot. Check your receiver and see if you can do this.

dipole speakers are like to speakers that are glued together at the back. i.e. same drivers on both the front and back of the speaker.

Come on honey why can't I spend some more money?

Hmm...

Does the Harman Kardon AVR 8000 have that? I dunno. Does anyone know if that AVR 8000 can do that?

My HT surround speakers are behind and ~7' above our listening position. While this is not an ideal location it was all I had to work with.

My receiver is a Yamaha RX-V95 and it does not have the surround speaker location thingy wife-said-no mentioned, but I bumped up the volume (I used the "Avia guide to Home Theater" and a rat shack SPL meter) to get them balanced with the rest of the speakers and they sound pretty darn good to everyone who has listened.

I am sure they would work better lower and to the side but life is full of compromises!
